Steins;Gate fans, this one is worth putting on the radar. Steins;Gate Re:Boot now has a confirmed Japan release date: August 20, 2026.
The remake is heading to PC and current-gen consoles, and yes, that includes Nintendo Switch 2. For Malaysian and SEA fans who either discovered Steins;Gate through the anime or the visual novel, this could be the cleanest entry point yet — especially if you missed the older versions or bounced off the dated presentation.
Studio MAGES confirmed the date through a new opening movie on YouTube, alongside a preview of the remake’s new E-mote system. The important bit for us outside Japan: a same-day North American release has not been confirmed yet, but the official website lists English and Chinese subtitle support. That is a very good sign for SEA players, where Steam, PlayStation, and Switch users often rely on English subs — and Chinese support matters a lot for the wider regional ACG crowd too.
What’s new in Re:Boot?
Steins;Gate Re:Boot was first announced in 2024, and it is not just a simple port. The remake is being positioned with updated visuals, a cleaner UI, and a refreshed version of the story.
The character art is also getting a modern pass. That means redesigned looks, new outfits, and extra accessories meant to make the cast feel more current without throwing away the identity fans already love. The remake will also include re-recorded voice lines and new background music from Takeshi Abo, the composer closely tied to the Science Adventure series’ mood and sound.
The biggest story hook is the addition of a new ending scenario. The original Steins;Gate already had six endings, so Re:Boot is adding fresh material on top of that. One producer has also said the new ending will come with a new ending song, which is exactly the kind of thing long-time fans will dissect frame by frame, no cap.
Editions and pricing in Japan
The official site currently lists multiple digital and physical editions. The standard digital edition is priced at 6,380 yen, while the highest-end limited edition goes up to 12,980 yen, or 14,080 yen on Switch 2.
Physical versions are confirmed for PS5 and Switch 2. One detail Switch collectors should note: the Switch 2 physical release uses a game-key card. That may matter if you are the type who prefers full games on cartridge, especially for collection value or long-term preservation.
For Malaysian buyers, the smarter move is probably to wait and see how Steam regional pricing and local console store pricing shake out. Visual novels can be niche here, but Steins;Gate is one of those rare titles with proper anime-name recognition, so there is a real chance SEA fans will show up if the pricing is not too painful.
Why this matters for anime fans
Steins;Gate is one of the big names in visual novels, and its anime adaptation is still treated as a gateway classic for sci-fi anime fans. The game follows Rintaro Okabe, an eccentric inventor trying to figure out time travel with a group of equally weird students.
Gameplay is still visual novel territory: lots of reading, dialogue choices, and decision-making. The Steam listing points to around 30 to 50 hours of playtime, so this is not a quick weekend snack. It is more like a proper anime season you actively steer.
This is also not the first remake. Steins;Gate Elite launched in 2019 and used animated scenes from the anime adaptation. On Nintendo Switch, Elite also came with 8-Bit ADV Steins;Gate as a bonus, though it is not yet clear whether Re:Boot will include that or anything similar.
For SEA fans, Re:Boot could be the version that finally makes Steins;Gate feel current again — better visuals, modern UI, subtitle support, and a new ending for returning players. If the English subtitle release lands smoothly here, this one could be a strong pickup for anime fans who want to go deeper than the show.
