Steins;Gate Re:Boot Is Finally Coming This August

Steins;Gate fans, the microwave is warming up again. After missing its earlier 2025 release window, Steins;Gate Re:Boot is now set to launch on August 20 across Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.

For newer anime fans, Steins;Gate is not your usual shonen power-up ride. No giant final boss beam struggle, no tournament arc — just a bunch of very questionable science bros accidentally messing with time and paying the emotional price for it. The original visual novel dropped in 2009, before the 2011 anime adaptation helped turn Rintaro Okabe and the Future Gadget Lab into proper anime culture icons.

Re:Boot brings the franchise back to its roots as a visual novel, but this is not just a simple HD port. According to developer MAGES, the new version is based on the scenario from Steins;Gate Elite, but adjusted to be quicker-paced and easier to read. That matters, because the original is beloved, but memang it can feel dense if you are coming in from the anime or modern VN pacing.

The bigger hook is that Re:Boot will include new worldlines and ending scenarios. For a series built entirely around timeline consequences, that is not a small bonus. Long-time fans who already know the original twists may actually have fresh reasons to go back in, while newcomers get a cleaner entry point without needing to hunt down older versions.

Visually, MAGES is also giving the game a full refresh. Characters, backgrounds, and event stills have all been redrawn from scratch. The studio says the number of event stills is around double compared with the Xbox 360 version, while background graphics have increased by roughly 1.2 times. In normal gamer language: more scenes, cleaner presentation, and hopefully less of that old VN stiffness when played on modern screens.

For Malaysia and SEA players, the platform spread is the real win here. Steam means PC players can jump in easily, while Switch and Switch 2 make this perfect for handheld play — MRT, LRT, balik kampung, hotel room during con weekend, all okay. PS4 support is also nice because not everyone here has moved fully to PS5 yet. Pricing for our region has not been detailed in the source, so best move is to wishlist it early and watch for Steam or eShop regional pricing closer to launch.

The timing is also interesting because Steins;Gate never really left anime conversation. A live-action adaptation was announced back in early 2020, and producer Tatsuya Matsubara said in 2024 that the project was still in production, though there has been no fresh update this year. The franchise has even crossed over with Hello Kitty before, which sounds cursed until you remember Steins;Gate has always been weird in the best way.

If you only know Steins;Gate through the anime, Re:Boot could be the most convenient way to experience the source story with a modern coat of paint. If you are already a veteran, the new routes and endings are the part to watch. Either way, one of anime gaming’s most respected sci-fi stories is getting another timeline.
