STEINS;GATE fans, mark the date: STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT is officially launching worldwide on August 20, 2026.
The remake of the original 2009 visual novel is coming to a pretty stacked platform list: Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. Basically, unless you are still gaming on a toaster, you should have a way to play this one.
Announced back in 2024, STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT was originally lined up for a 2026 release window, and now MAGES has locked in the global date. The remake will bring refreshed graphics plus additional story content, which is a big deal for a series where every little conversation, timeline shift, and emotional gut punch matters.
The new opening movie has also been revealed, featuring Kanako Ito’s iconic theme song Skyclad Observer. For longtime fans, that track alone is enough to trigger the “okay, we are so back” feeling. The project has also shown off a new E-mote motion video, pointing to a more modern presentation style compared to the original static visual novel feel.
Why Malaysian and SEA fans should care
STEINS;GATE is one of those series that sits in the “if you know, you know” zone. It is not just another sci-fi anime game; it is one of the most respected visual novels ever, mixing time travel, otaku culture, conspiracy tension, and very painful character drama into one properly memorable package.
For Malaysia and Southeast Asia, the platform spread is especially nice. Steam means PC players can jump in without worrying about import copies. Switch and Switch 2 support is also important here because handheld gaming is huge across SEA, especially for players who want to read visual novels in bed, on commute, or during balik kampung downtime. PS5 and Xbox support covers the console crowd too.
The subtitle options are also strong for this region. STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT will support Japanese, English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese subtitles. English is the obvious win for Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and broader SEA players, while Chinese subtitle support makes it more accessible for Chinese-reading fans in Malaysia and beyond.
A quick reminder of why STEINS;GATE is a big name
The original STEINS;GATE first launched for Xbox 360 in Japan in October 2009 before being ported to platforms like Windows, PlayStation, iOS, and Android. Western releases came later, with North America getting it through JAST USA in 2014 and Europe through PQube in 2015.
The franchise also expanded way beyond the game. There was a manga adaptation by Yomi Sarachi from 2009 to 2013, anime adaptations by White Fox in 2011 and 2018, plus an animated film in 2013. On the game side, the series has multiple spin-offs, including My Darling’s Embrace, Hen’i Kuukan no Octet, Linear Bounded Phenogram, and STEINS;GATE 0.
There was also STEINS;GATE Elite in 2019, a remake that used fully animated cutscenes from the anime. The Nintendo Switch version even came with an 8-bit style bonus game, because of course this franchise would do something nerdy like that.
For newcomers, RE:BOOT could be the cleanest entry point yet. For veterans, it is a chance to revisit Akihabara’s most chaotic lab with better visuals and fresh material. Either way, August 2026 is now officially on the watchlist.
