Steins;Gate fans, the microwave is heating up again.

MAGES. has confirmed that Steins;Gate Re:Boot will launch on August 20 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The company also released the game’s opening cinematic through its YouTube channel, giving fans their first proper look at how this updated version is presenting one of anime gaming’s most beloved time-travel stories.

For Malaysian and SEA players, the platform spread is honestly the best part. Whether you are still on PS4, already moved to PS5, gaming mostly on Switch, or just waiting to grab it on Steam during a sale, Re:Boot is not being locked to one ecosystem. That matters a lot here, especially for visual novel fans who often get stuck waiting for late ports or region-specific releases.

The language support is also solid. The game is listed with Japanese, English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese text, while the voice audio remains Japanese only. For SEA, that makes it much more accessible than a Japan-only VN drop. English support covers most local players, while Chinese text is a big plus for Malaysia, Singapore, and wider regional audiences who grew up consuming anime games in multiple languages.

Re:Boot was first planned for a 2025 release before being pushed into 2026. Now that August 20 is officially on the calendar, fans finally have a real date instead of just “soon”.

This is not just a basic re-release either. Character designer huke is involved again, with the characters getting updated clothing and accessories. The event stills were also drawn under huke’s supervision, which should help the game feel refreshed without losing the original identity. That balance is important because Steins;Gate has a very specific visual mood — messy lab energy, Akihabara otaku culture, and that slightly paranoid sci-fi tension.

The backgrounds are being rebuilt around Akihabara as it looked in 2010, and MAGES. is adding locations that were not in the original game. There will also be new scenes, so even longtime fans who already know Okabe, Kurisu, Mayuri, and the whole Future Gadget Lab chaos may have a reason to revisit the story properly.

The timing makes sense too. A 15th anniversary movie streamed back in October 2024 with the message, “Steins;Gate will continue.” Re:Boot now looks like one of the clearest ways MAGES. is keeping that promise.

For newer anime fans, here’s the quick catch-up: the original Steins;Gate game launched in 2009 as the second entry in the Science Adventure Series from MAGES., back when the company was known as 5pb. It later became the 2011 TV anime that turned the franchise into a modern sci-fi classic. The series also led to the 2013 sequel film Steins;Gate – The Movie – Load Region of Déjà Vu, the alternate retelling Steins;Gate 0 in 2018, plus multiple sequel games, spinoffs, and manga adaptations.

A Hollywood live-action TV adaptation was announced in 2020, and MAGES. also revealed that year that it was developing Steins;Gate 0 Elite.

For Malaysia’s anime and VN crowd, Re:Boot feels like a good entry point if you somehow missed the original — and a nostalgia trap for everyone who still remembers getting emotionally wrecked by the anime. Just make sure you clear your backlog before August, bro. This one is not the kind of story you casually half-play while scrolling TikTok.
