Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for Legendary Entertainment's live-action Street Fighter movie, along with a batch of character posters showing off the cast.

The film is currently set to open on October 16, and it also carries a bit of extra weight behind the scenes. This will be the first title released under Paramount and Legendary's new multi-year distribution deal, with Paramount handling worldwide distribution outside China, while Legendary East manages China.

That is a pretty major change for the project, because Sony Pictures was originally lined up to distribute the film. Back when Sony still had it, the movie was supposed to hit cinemas on March 20, 2026, but it was later removed from Sony's release calendar in March 2025.

Now, the movie is moving forward under a different setup, with Kitao Sakurai directing. If the name sounds familiar, he's best known for work like The Eric André Show and Bad Trip. Production on the film started in Australia in August last year.

This version of Street Fighter has already gone through a few notable behind-the-scenes changes. Danny and Michael Philippou were initially attached to direct, but they eventually stepped away to focus on making Bring Her Back instead. Legendary, meanwhile, picked up the film and TV rights to Street Fighter in April 2023, and has been working with CAPCOM on future projects tied to the franchise.

For longtime fans, this is also another chapter in a series that has never really disappeared from pop culture. Street Fighter already got the big Hollywood treatment once with the 1994 live-action film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raúl Juliá, Ming-Na Wen, Damian Chapa, Kylie Minogue, and Wes Studi. There was also the 2009 spinoff Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li starring Kristin Kreuk.

Outside of films, the franchise has had a decent run in live-action and animation too. Machinima's Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist arrived in 2014, followed by Street Fighter: Resurrection in 2016. On the animated side, fans still remember Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie from 1994, plus the other anime and animated series that came after.

Why does this matter for Malaysia and SEA? Easy, bro: Street Fighter is still one of the most recognisable fighting game brands in the region. Whether you're into arcade history, local FGC events, or just grew up seeing Ryu and Chun-Li everywhere, this is a franchise that still has serious pull. And with Street Fighter 6 staying active across PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and now Nintendo Switch 2 as well, the timing makes sense. CAPCOM's latest game launched in June 2023, and the Years 1-2 Fighters Edition also landed when the Switch 2 version released last June.

So even if live-action game movies can be a bit hit-or-miss, this new trailer matters because it shows the project is very much alive, properly backed, and finally settling into a clearer release plan. For SEA fans, especially those who still follow the fighting game scene, this is one to keep on the radar. If Paramount sticks the landing, Street Fighter could end up pulling in both old-school fans and the newer SF6 crowd.
