Takara Tomy’s Licca x Frieren and Sanrio Dolls Look Way More Premium Than Expected

Takara Tomy’s latest Licca-chan crossover dolls are looking seriously tempting for anime and Sanrio collectors. As part of the brand’s 2026 North American rollout, the company is pushing out crossover versions based on Frieren, Kuromi, and My Melody, and the big selling point here is simple: these do not look like lazy reskins.

According to impressions shared by Siliconera, all three dolls put real effort into costume design, materials, and character-specific details. That matters, because collector dolls live or die by the small stuff, especially when fans are already used to paying painful import prices for Japan-exclusive releases.

For Malaysian and SEA collectors, that part hits close to home. Importing dolls and figures from Japan has never been cheap, and once a design gets popular, stock can disappear fast. So anytime a Japanese brand expands outside its home market, it instantly becomes more relevant to fans here too, even if you’re still buying through resellers, hobby stores, or forwarding services.

What makes these Licca dolls stand out?

One of the first things noted about the new release is the compact packaging. The boxes are small, stable, and designed with large display windows, which is great news for collectors who prefer keeping items sealed without sacrificing shelf space. That sounds minor, but if you collect figures, dolls, or acrylic merch in Malaysia apartments or smaller rooms, you already know storage is half the battle.

The bigger story, though, is the actual outfit construction.

The My Melody Licca seems to lean hardest into soft, layered fashion details. Instead of relying only on printed patterns, it uses elements like real lace, ribbons, and sheer chiffon or organza-style sleeve fabric, plus a more elaborate headpiece with plush bunny ears, bows, thread accents, and lace trim. Even the hair gets a themed treatment, with blonde on top and pink underneath.

The Kuromi version goes for a more casual gothic-punk look, but still sounds loaded with detail. The top includes shoulder slits, lace-style accents, and a gothic-inspired Kuromi print, while the purple plaid skirt adds pleats, frills, ribbon work, and pink pom-pom details. Matching hair accents and oversized hoop earrings help sell the look, and the doll also features purple highlights to tie the whole design together.

Frieren fans should probably keep an eye on this one

The Frieren Licca may look more understated at first glance, but it sounds like it could be the most impressive one if you care about accuracy. Takara Tomy reportedly gave the doll long elf ears, removable earrings modeled after Frieren’s, and facial styling that better matches the anime character, including her eyebrow colour, bangs, and twin-tail hairstyle.

Her costume also gets more attention than a standard fashion doll release. The dress uses fabric trim and gold ribbon accents rather than depending only on printed details, while the belt, capelet, black tights, and brown boots all help recreate Frieren’s look properly. The capelet is removable too, and even includes a small button detail at the collar. The only missing extra is an obvious one: there’s no staff accessory included.

Why this matters for anime collectors in SEA

This is the kind of release that sits nicely between anime merch and fashion doll collecting. If you’re a Frieren fan, or the sort of person who buys Sanrio collabs the second they drop, these feel more like proper display pieces than throwaway novelty tie-ins.

That also fits current collector culture across Malaysia and the wider region. Anime merch buyers here are already comfortable mixing scales, brands, and formats, from prize figures and nendoroids to blind boxes and plush. A well-made Licca collab gives fans something a bit different, especially if they want character merch that feels more premium and stylised.

Takara Tomy’s North American Licca rollout is happening now, and the Frieren, Kuromi, and My Melody dolls are among the early crossover releases.
