Tetris Is Getting a Board Game and a Rubik’s Cube-Style Puzzle in Japan

Tetris is heading off-screen again, this time with two new physical releases from MegaHouse: a multiplayer board game and a Tetris-themed Rubik’s Cube-style puzzle.

Both items are set to go on sale in Japan in late April 2026, giving one of gaming’s most recognisable brands another spin outside the usual console and mobile space.

Two very different takes on Tetris

The bigger of the two reveals is the Tetris Board Game, priced at ¥4,620 (around US$29). It supports up to four players, and the core idea is simple: everyone has to use the same Tetrimino shown on the Play box each turn.

From there, players score by completing lines, which keeps the tabletop version tied closely to the classic video game formula. MegaHouse is also adding score multipliers for consecutive line clears, so there is still a strong reward for chaining clean plays instead of just surviving each round.

There are also a few extra mechanics to make it feel more competitive in a group setting:

  • Players can save a piece for later using a Hold card
  • Landing a Tetrimino on a dotted grid lets a player place an obstructive Tetrimino on someone else’s board

That second rule especially sounds like the part that could make this one fun, or slightly chaotic, during family nights and casual gatherings.

A Tetris twist on the cube puzzle

MegaHouse is also releasing a Tetris Rubik’s Cube for ¥4,950 (about US$31.15), but this is not just a normal cube with Tetris branding printed on it.

The goal here is to create six Tetriminos across five sides, with the blue and red Tetriminos sharing the same side. Because a standard 3x3 cube does not have enough space to properly represent the long straight-four Tetrimino, that piece is instead included as the cube’s stand.

It is a neat design choice, and probably the more collector-friendly of the two products, especially for fans who like displayable game merchandise rather than full tabletop sessions.

Why this matters for Malaysia and SEA

For readers in Malaysia and the wider SEA region, this is exactly the kind of release that sits nicely between gaming nostalgia and collectible merch.

Tetris is one of those rare franchises that cuts across generations. Older players know it from handhelds and arcade-era puzzle gaming, while younger fans still run into it through modern versions, crossovers, and digital re-releases. That makes these products easier to appreciate even if you are not deep into the board game hobby scene.

The board game could also appeal to local café gaming crowds, anime and hobby communities, and collectors who already import Japan-exclusive merch. Meanwhile, the cube feels like a clean fit for desk setups, streamer backgrounds, or just a conversation piece for anyone into retro gaming culture.

There is no mention yet of a wider SEA release in the available details, so fans here may need to keep an eye on import stores and Japanese retailers if they want one early.

Official trailers are already up

MegaHouse has also published official trailers for both products on its YouTube channel, giving fans an early look at how each one works in practice.

If you would still rather keep your Tetris sessions digital, the series remains widely available across current platforms. The report specifically points to Tetris Forever, which can be played on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

For now, though, these two new releases are a fun reminder that Tetris still has enough pull to work far beyond a screen.
