The World Is Dancing is officially stepping into the Summer 2026 anime season. The historical anime has confirmed a July 2 premiere, alongside a new main trailer, key visual, and additional cast members.
For anime fans in Malaysia and SEA who want something beyond the usual isekai grind or battle shonen queue, this one is worth keeping on the radar. The series adapts Kazuto Mihara’s manga about the early roots of Noh theatre, one of Japan’s most important traditional performance arts. Not exactly your standard seasonal popcorn watch, but that’s what makes it interesting lah.
The anime is being co-produced by Shochiku and CyberAgent, with animation handled by Cypic, the studio previously known as CygamesPictures. The project was first announced earlier this year, and this latest update gives us the clearest look so far at its mood: historical drama, performance, and a young artist trying to understand why people dance.
New cast joins the stage
The previously announced main cast is now joined by several familiar names:
- Takahiro Sakurai as Ashikaga Yoshimitsu
- Nobuo Tobita as Nijo Yoshimoto
- Mamiko Noto as Nariko
- Inori Minase as Chiharu
- Hazuki Seto as Satsuki
That is a pretty stacked voice lineup, especially if you follow Japanese seiyuu closely. The new trailer also features the opening theme, 'shusho', performed by Japanese rock band Macaroni Empitsu.
Why this anime feels different
The big hook here is not just the historical setting. The production is clearly trying to treat Noh performance with proper respect instead of using it as background flavour only.
Reijiro Tsumura, a Kanze-school Noh performer and holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property status, is supervising the Noh choreography. That’s a serious credential, bro. The show is also getting choreography input from dancer Kaiji Moriyama, who directed the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics Opening Ceremony, and choreographer Mikiko Kawamura.
On the core anime staff side, Toshimasa Kuroyanagi is directing. His past credits include The Great Passage and Backflip!!, both shows that understood character-focused movement and emotional rhythm. Keigo Sasaki is handling character design, with previous work connected to The Millionaire Detective and Lonely Castle in the Mirror. Satoru Nemoto is credited for calligraphy and title lettering.
What is The World Is Dancing about?
The story begins in 1374, during the long conflict between Japan’s Northern and Southern Courts. The lead character, Oniyasha, is born into a family of sarugaku theatre performers. He lives with one question stuck in his heart: why do people dance?
After witnessing a performance that deeply moves him, his life starts to shift. That boy will eventually become Zeami, the historical figure remembered for helping shape Noh into the formal art we know today.
The original manga ran for six volumes in Kodansha’s Morning magazine, and its English version is available via KODANSHA.
For Malaysian anime fans, this could be a nice change of pace if you enjoy shows that mix history, art, and personal growth. Think less power-scaling, more cultural deep dive. If the animation and choreography land properly, The World Is Dancing might become one of those underrated seasonal gems people only discover after the hype crowd moves on.
