Toei is officially stepping deeper into games — and no, this is not just another anime tie-in project.
On April 21, 2026, Toei Company announced the formation of Toei Games, a new publishing label focused on releasing video games. The first announcement from the label is already locked in for April 24, 2026, though Toei has not shared a release window yet.
For now, the plan starts with PC games on Steam, with future releases also targeting home consoles including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. That platform spread matters for SEA players because Steam remains the easiest entry point for many Malaysian gamers, while Switch and PS5 are still strong in the local anime/gaming crowd.
The more interesting part is what Toei Games is not doing — at least for this first wave. According to the announcement, the company is not starting by leaning on existing franchises. That means no confirmed Dragon Ball, One Piece, Kamen Rider, or other familiar Toei properties under this new label for now. Instead, Toei Games will focus on new game-original IPs.
That is a bold move, bro. Toei has decades of heavyweight entertainment history behind it, so the obvious safe play would have been to push out another licensed anime game. Going original means the company is trying to build something that can stand as a game first, not just merchandise for an existing fanbase.
Toei also appears to be thinking beyond Japan. Its press release mentions creators from both Japan and overseas, suggesting Toei Games wants a more international creative pipeline. For Malaysia and the wider SEA region, that could be good news if the games are designed with global players in mind from day one — especially when it comes to Steam availability, language support, pricing, and simultaneous releases.
There is also a fun detail behind the new label’s identity. The Toei Games logo was created by Kairosoft, the studio known for charming sprite-based simulation games such as Game Dev Story, Dungeon Village, and Doraemon Dorayaki Shop Story. The logo itself is a pixel animation take on Toei’s famous opening logo, “Waves on the Rough Shore,” which longtime anime and tokusatsu fans may recognise from Toei’s productions.
According to the announcement, members of Toei Games personally visited Kairosoft’s headquarters to request the logo. That little collaboration already gives the label a slightly more game-native feel instead of looking like a random corporate side project.
For context, Toei Company was founded in 1949 and is one of Japan’s major entertainment names. Its footprint covers anime, tokusatsu, films, period dramas, and more. The company has been involved with major works and franchises including Battle Royale, Kamen Rider, Dragon Ball, and One Piece.
The big question now is simple: what kind of game does Toei want to publish when it is not relying on its existing IP catalogue?
If the April 24 reveal is a small experimental title, that is still interesting. If it is something bigger with international creators attached, then Toei Games could become a new label worth watching closely — especially for SEA fans who already grew up with Toei’s anime and tokusatsu legacy.
Either way, the first reveal will tell us whether Toei Games is just testing the waters or seriously trying to become a proper player in the games publishing scene.
