Ufotable is not slowing down, bro.
After turning Demon Slayer into a global monster and pushing anime movie hype to ridiculous levels with Infinity Castle, the studio is now giving fans a closer look at its next fantasy film: Witch on the Holy Night.
The upcoming movie is based on the visual novel developed and published by Type-Moon, the same creative universe linked to Fate, Tsukihime, and The Garden of Sinners. For long-time anime fans in Malaysia and SEA who grew up seeing Type-Moon titles discussed in forums, conventions, and figure booths, this one is a pretty big deal.
The main trio finally gets the spotlight
The official X account for the anime has introduced the story’s core trio with new character visuals and short descriptions.
The characters are:
- Aoko Aozaki — the main protagonist, a magician who has just entered high school
- Sojuro Shizuki — a seemingly normal boy who attends the same school as Aoko, voiced by Yusuke Kobayashi
- Alice Kuonji — a witch living in a secluded mansion who also attends a prestigious girls’ academy
That setup already sounds very Type-Moon: quiet town, mysterious mansion, magic rules, and one unlucky normal guy getting dragged into supernatural chaos. Memang classic.
Why Witch on the Holy Night matters
Witch on the Holy Night is an original story by Kinoko Nasu, the creator behind Fate and The Garden of Sinners. The story takes place in the 1980s, making it one of the earliest points in the wider Type-Moon timeline.
The film is set in Misaki Town, where an old mansion is rumoured to house a witch. That mansion is where Aoko Aozaki learns sorcery from Alice Kuonji. Aoko’s family also oversees the land beneath the town, which immediately adds that layered Type-Moon lore feeling where family bloodlines, territory, and magic systems all matter.
Things kick off when unknown intruders disturb the town’s bounded field. Aoko and Alice investigate, get attacked by a puppet, and burn it with magic — only to realise Sojuro has seen the whole thing. From there, he becomes tangled with the mansion, the girls, and the hidden world of magic.
For Type-Moon fans, the bigger hook is that Witch on the Holy Night acts as a prequel to Tsukihime and explores the backstory of Aoko Aozaki, who is connected to Shiki Tohno’s story.
SEA fans should keep an eye on this one
Right now, the film still does not have a confirmed release date. It was announced in February with a short 34-second teaser that showed off the two main girls and the mansion at the centre of the story.
The source notes that the release window is expected to begin with Japanese theatres first, which is usually how major anime films roll. For Malaysia and SEA, that likely means fans will need to wait for local cinema or distributor announcements after the Japan launch.
Still, Ufotable’s name carries serious weight here. Demon Slayer helped prove that anime films can pull massive cinema crowds, including in markets like Malaysia where anime screenings are no longer niche side events. If Witch on the Holy Night gets a proper regional rollout, expect Type-Moon fans, Fate fans, and animation nerds to show up just to see how hard Ufotable cooks the magic sequences.
No release date yet, but this is definitely one to keep on the radar.
