Umamusume cosplay at an actual racecourse? That is the idea behind Cosplay Trackside, which returns to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, on October 24 and 25. The fan-organised meetup runs from noon to 5pm on both days.
The gathering takes place alongside Santa Anita Park’s Japan Family Day, an occasion tied to the venue’s partnership with Japan’s Oi Racetrack. For this event, the racing backdrop is not just decoration: live horse racing is part of the programme.
What’s happening at the track?
The announced activities bring together DJ sets, cosplay performances, vendors and an alley for artists and merchants. Attendees are encouraged to arrive in cosplay, although full-face masks are not permitted.
There are also a couple of character-specific stops to look out for. Life-size cutouts of Special Week and Cesario will be positioned in the Fountain Area, near the main entrance at Gate 8.
On each day, the first 1,000 attendees will receive an official Umamusume: Pretty Derby collaboration pin featuring Special Week. That makes the giveaway a daily allocation rather than one shared pool across the entire weekend.
For the contests, Umamusume guide website Uma.guide is supplying prizes courtesy of Kotobukiya: 1/7-scale figures of Sakura Chiyono O and Tokai Teio. The supplied announcement does not detail the contest categories or entry requirements, so those prizes should not be read as a complete competition guide.
Tickets and what they include
General admission is listed at $10, with tickets available through Santa Anita Park’s website.
A separate “Japanese Eats Start Pack” costs $43.84. That package includes:
- Admission
- A betting tip sheet
- A commemorative gift
- A $15 food voucher
- A sake-based cocktail
These are the listed ticket prices for the California event, not Malaysian pricing. The two ticket options also have different inclusions, so the higher-priced package is more than an admission-only ticket.
This is a return outing for Cosplay Trackside. Its first event was held on May 16, and Anime Corner previously interviewed one of the organisers.
Why the setting fits Umamusume
Cygames’ Umamusume: Pretty Derby turns real-world racehorses into anthropomorphic characters. Starting as a mobile game, the property has grown to include manga, television anime, OVAs, a theatrical film and additional games.
Following the mobile game’s global release, the franchise has also inspired fan gatherings and cosplay races endorsed by racetracks. Cosplay Trackside sits within that broader crossover between the fictional characters and the sport behind them.
The Malaysia/SEA angle: a community format worth watching
Analysis: For Malaysia and SEA readers following anime and gaming culture, the interesting part is how closely the venue connects to the franchise. A racecourse gives this meetup a thematic link that a standard exhibition space would not automatically have, while the performances, art stalls and collectibles offer activities beyond racing itself.
That is a useful example of how a fandom event can build around its source material rather than simply put characters on a poster. It is not evidence of a Malaysian or SEA edition, however: the event details here apply to Santa Anita Park in California.
