If you somehow missed the hype around Witch Hat Atelier Episode 5, now is the time to catch a taste of why anime fans are making noise about it.
The official Witch Hat Atelier YouTube channel has uploaded roughly six minutes from the climax of Episode 5, spotlighting the intense dragon encounter and Qifrey’s big appearance. The clip is only available for a limited time, with streaming set to end on June 30.
Episode 5 originally premiered worldwide on April 27, and it looks like the momentum is finally hitting full speed. After weeks of strong support, the anime reached No. 1 for the first time following this episode. According to Anime Corner’s ranking, Witch Hat Atelier pulled in 9.20% of the votes, with many viewers calling Episode 5 the strongest instalment so far.
For Malaysian and SEA anime fans, this one is worth paying attention to because Witch Hat Atelier is not just another fantasy seasonal show trying to look pretty. The series has the kind of worldbuilding, animation detail, and emotional magic-system storytelling that can actually grow beyond the usual weekly anime crowd. If you’re the type who loves Frieren-style quiet fantasy, detailed craft, and characters learning that the world is bigger than what adults told them, this is very much in your lane.
The anime is being animated by BUG FILMS, the studio behind Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, while Crunchyroll is handling global streaming. That means viewers in Malaysia and most of SEA should have a straightforward legal way to follow the show, assuming local availability on the platform.
The main staff includes Ayumu Watanabe as director, Jun Shinohara as assistant director, Hiroshi Seko on series composition, and Kairi Unabara handling character design and chief animation direction. The art direction is by Ryota Goto, colour design by Naomi Nakano, photography direction by Tadashi Kitaoka, and music by Yuka Kitamura.
For those new to the franchise, Witch Hat Atelier, also known as Tongari Boshi no Atelier, is based on the manga by Kamome Shirahama. It has been serialised in Kodansha’s Morning Two magazine since July 2016, with 16 volumes released as of April 2026. The series also has a spin-off, Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen, which began in November 2019.
The manga has already passed 7 million copies in circulation, so this is not some tiny hidden gem anymore. It also picked up major recognition in 2020, winning the Harvey Award for Best Manga and the Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia.
The story follows Coco, a girl living in a world where magic and dragons are normal parts of life. Her dream is to become a witch, but she believes that magic is something people are born with, not something they can learn. Everything changes when she meets the travelling magician Qifrey and discovers that the rules she grew up believing may not be the full truth.
That premise is exactly why the Episode 5 clip matters. The dragon scene is not just action for action’s sake — it shows the anime’s bigger appeal: wonder, danger, and that feeling of watching someone realise their world is opening up in a scary but exciting way.
If Witch Hat Atelier keeps this level up, don’t be surprised if it becomes one of the fantasy anime Malaysian fans keep recommending all season.
