Type-Moon fans finally got another proper look at the upcoming Witch on the Holy Night anime movie, and this one is focused on the main cast.
During a presentation stage at the 2026 Machi Asobi event, Type-Moon, Ufotable, and Aniplex revealed new key character art for the film. The movie is currently scheduled to hit Japanese cinemas in 2026, so this is still very much part of the slow build-up rather than a full release push.
The three visuals shown at the event spotlighted the movie's central characters: Aoko, Soujyuro, and Alice.
Aoko, Soujyuro, and Alice get the spotlight
First up is Aoko, voiced by Haruka Tomatsu. The character description shared during the reveal frames her as a modern-day magician, though still an apprentice. After entering high school, she ends up inheriting her grandfather's legacy as a mage.
The second character shown was Soujyuro, who will be voiced by Yusuke Kobayashi. He is described as a countryside boy who comes down into the modern world and eventually transfers into the same high school attended by Aoko and the others.
The final visual from the stage was for Alice, voiced by Kana Hanazawa. She is described as a witch living hidden away in the present day, while also attending Reien Girls' Academy, a school known for its refined image.
For anime fans in Malaysia and SEA, the cast alone is enough to keep this one on the radar. Haruka Tomatsu, Yusuke Kobayashi, and Kana Hanazawa are all names that regular anime viewers will recognise, and with Ufotable handling the film, expectations for the visual side will naturally be high. That said, the key thing to remember is that this update is still about Japan first. There is no SEA cinema or streaming release detail in this reveal yet.
The promo push is starting to feel real
Haruka Tomatsu and Yusuke Kobayashi were also present at the Machi Asobi stage, where they helped promote other parts of the movie campaign, including MoviTicke card sales.
There was also a fun extra bit of promotion tied to Tokushima. The following day, Haruka Tomatsu briefly served as chief of JR Tokushima Station, attending the launch ceremony for the first train and providing in-station announcements using Aoko's voice. For fans, that is the kind of very Japanese anime promo moment that probably makes overseas viewers jealous because, bro, imagine hearing an in-character station announcement during your commute.
Still a long wait, but progress is progress
The Witch on the Holy Night movie has been in production for more than four years. The first teaser trailer arrived back in late 2021, followed by another teaser in late 2023. Since then, the film has been given a 2026 release window.
For Malaysian fans, the practical takeaway is simple: do not expect to book tickets here yet, but do start watching for distributor news once the Japan release gets closer. Anime films can take a while to reach SEA cinemas, especially if the rollout is staggered, but Type-Moon plus Ufotable is the kind of combo that could attract enough fan demand for regional screenings.
For now, this character art reveal is a solid sign that the movie is moving forward. Aoko, Soujyuro, and Alice are officially front and centre, and the 2026 Japan theatrical release is still the target.
