Nintendo has dropped a new overview trailer for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, giving fans a clearer look at what the green dino is bringing to Nintendo Switch 2 when the game launches on May 21.
The trailer focuses on the game’s main hook: Yoshi dives into a magical book, and once he is inside, the whole adventure shifts into a hand-drawn picture-book style. If you’ve played past Yoshi games, you already know Nintendo likes giving this series a softer, arts-and-crafts identity — but this one looks like it is leaning even harder into that bedtime-story fantasy vibe.
For Malaysian and SEA players, this is the kind of first-party Nintendo release that matters because it helps define the Switch 2’s early library. A new console can have all the specs in the world, but what really sells the thing is whether the exclusive games feel charming, polished, and different from what we already had on the original Switch. Yoshi may not be as loud as Mario Kart or Zelda, but the series has always been one of Nintendo’s comfort-food platformers.
Creature discovery is the big gameplay twist
The overview trailer shows Yoshi exploring different worlds and discovering creatures along the way. These creatures are not just cute background mascots either — Yoshi can carry them on his back to gain new abilities.
That sounds like the main system Nintendo wants players to experiment with. Instead of only relying on Yoshi’s classic jumping and platforming moves, the game seems built around finding the right creature for the situation and using its power to progress. For younger players, it should be easy to understand. For completionists, it could also mean plenty of hidden routes, collectibles, and replay value if Nintendo goes deep with the mechanic.
The trailer also previews the game’s worlds, Yoshi’s abilities, the return of Bowser Jr. and Kamek as villains, plus amiibo support. Nintendo has not turned amiibo into a headline feature in the same way it did years ago, but for collectors in Malaysia who still have figures sitting on the shelf, it is nice to see support continuing.
Yoshi’s been quiet for a while
This is also Yoshi’s first major outing in years. The previous entry, Yoshi’s Crafted World, launched for the original Nintendo Switch in March 2019. That game had a cardboard-and-craft aesthetic, so this new magical-book angle feels like a natural follow-up rather than a hard reboot.
Yoshi himself has been part of Nintendo history for a long time. He first appeared in Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo in 1990, before taking the lead in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island in 1995. After that came Yoshi’s Story for Nintendo 64 in 1997, and since then he has popped up across mainline Mario games and spin-offs like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros.
The timing is pretty smart too. Yoshi is getting more spotlight outside games, with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie already opened in North America on April 3 and set to open in Japan on Friday. The sequel film also brings in Donald Glover as Yoshi, which should push even more mainstream attention toward the character.
So yes, this is not the most hardcore Switch 2 title on the horizon. But for families, platformer fans, and longtime Nintendo people, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is shaping up to be one of those cosy launch-window games that quietly does a lot of work. Cute, polished, and probably dangerous for anyone who says “I’ll just play one stage.”
