Nintendo’s next big jump from console to cinema is arriving a little earlier than expected. The live-action The Legend of Zelda movie has officially shifted its worldwide theatrical release date to April 30, 2027, moving up from its previous May 7 slot.

The update was shared through a social media message from Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary Nintendo designer behind Zelda. According to Miyamoto, the team is pushing hard to get the film ready for audiences, with less than a year left before release.

For Malaysian and SEA fans, this is one to keep on the radar early. Zelda has always had a huge global gaming legacy, but unlike Mario, it is not the easiest Nintendo property to translate into a mainstream movie. The series is known for quiet adventure, fantasy mystery, dungeons, music, and that very specific sense of wonder. If the film gets the tone right, it could introduce a whole new wave of casual moviegoers here to Hyrule, not just longtime Switch owners.

The film was originally planned for March 2027 before being delayed to May 7, 2027. Now, with the date moved forward by one week, Nintendo seems confident enough to bring it slightly closer. It is a small change on paper, but for fans tracking every Zelda update, bro, even one week earlier counts.

The project is being co-produced by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Wes Ball, best known for directing The Maze Runner, is directing the movie, while Derek Connolly is writing the script. Connolly’s past credits include Jurassic World and Kong: Skull Island, so this is clearly being positioned as a large-scale fantasy adventure rather than a small niche adaptation.

Casting is also already locked in for the two key roles. Bo Bragason will play Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is set to play Link. That casting choice suggests Nintendo and Sony are going with younger rising talent instead of only chasing big-name star power, which honestly may be better for a property like Zelda. The characters need to feel like they belong in Hyrule first, not like celebrities doing cosplay.

This film also comes after Nintendo proved that its games can dominate the box office. The Super Mario Bros. Movie crossed over US$1 billion worldwide, turning Mario into a proper cinema juggernaut. Its follow-up, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, premiered worldwide in April 2026.

Zelda is a different beast, though. Mario works because it is bright, fast, funny, and instantly recognisable even to people who barely play games. Zelda needs atmosphere. It needs adventure. It needs the music to hit. It needs Link and Zelda to feel sincere, not awkwardly modernised for the sake of it.

For Malaysia, the big question closer to release will be local cinema rollout, subtitle options, premium formats, and whether Nintendo fans here get any special screenings or merch tie-ins. Given the brand power behind Nintendo and Sony Pictures, expect this to be a major 2027 movie event across SEA if the marketing lands properly.

For now, the important bit is simple: The Legend of Zelda live-action movie is coming to cinemas worldwide on April 30, 2027.
