007 First Light Locks In May 27 Launch After Going Gold

IO Interactive has confirmed that 007 First Light has gone gold, meaning the main development work is done and the game is now moving through the final steps before release.

For players, that is basically the green light: the May 27 launch is now looking locked in for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. After the game was pushed back by two months for extra polish, this is the kind of update Bond fans were waiting for.

Of course, “gone gold” does not mean your download will be tiny or that everything is fully frozen forever. Modern games almost always ship with post-gold fixes, and IO Interactive has already made it clear that a day-one patch will be part of the experience. One important detail: players will need that update downloaded if they want to play offline.

For Malaysian and SEA players, that matters more than people think. If you are buying physical, don’t assume the disc alone means you can instantly jump in during launch night. Make sure your PS5, Xbox or PC has enough storage ready, and maybe don’t leave the patch download until peak WiFi war hours.

A new Bond, not just another licensed game

007 First Light is not adapting one specific movie. Instead, IO Interactive is building a fresh origin story for James Bond, showing how he moves from the Royal Navy into MI6’s 00 program.

The campaign is expected to run around 20 hours, tracking Bond before he becomes the smooth, controlled spy everyone recognises. This version starts younger, more reckless and more impulsive, then slowly grows into the calculating agent behind the number.

That setup is honestly the most interesting part. Bond games can easily fall into basic third-person shooting, but IO Interactive has the right resume for something smarter. This is the studio behind Hitman, so the expectation is that some missions will lean into stealth, sandbox-style problem solving and player choice rather than just corridor gunfights.

At the same time, IOI is not simply making Hitman in a tux. The game is adding Bond-flavoured systems such as bluffing, close-quarters combat and shooting, which should help it feel more aggressive and cinematic compared to Agent 47’s cold, methodical style.

Switch 2 players need to wait longer

While PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC players are getting the game on May 27, the Nintendo Switch 2 version has been delayed again and is now planned for later this summer. IO Interactive said that version needs a bit more time to hit the quality bar.

That is slightly painful if you were hoping to play Bond handheld-first, but honestly, better a delayed Switch 2 port than a rough one. SEA players love portable gaming, especially for travel, campus life and commuting, but nobody wants another compromised version that runs like it is fighting for its life.

For now, the safest bet for launch week is still PS5 or PC, depending on your setup. If you are on PC, check the final requirements before pre-ordering, especially if your rig is a few GPU generations behind.

IO Interactive is also offering a free deluxe edition upgrade for pre-orders, according to the studio’s announcement. As always, pre-order only if you are already sold, bro. Going gold is a strong sign, but reviews and performance impressions will still matter.

Still, this is a big milestone. A proper Bond origin story from the Hitman studio has serious potential, and if IOI nails the balance between spy fantasy, stealth sandboxes and action, 007 First Light could be one of the more interesting licensed games of the year.
