Google Gemini Intelligence Wants To Handle Android App Tasks For You

Google is pushing Android deeper into the AI agent era, and this one is not just about asking chatbot questions anymore.

During its Android Show: I/O Edition, Google announced Gemini Intelligence, a new system built to help Android devices complete tasks across apps with less manual tapping from the user. Think of it as an AI helper that can move through your phone apps, understand what needs to be done, and carry out multi-step actions.

Google says it spent five months tuning the agent so it can work across some of the most commonly used phone apps. The idea is simple: instead of you opening one app, copying info, jumping to another app, searching, adding items, and confirming things manually, Gemini Intelligence can handle parts of that flow.

One example Google gave is pretty practical. If a student receives a class syllabus in Gmail, Gemini could read it, identify the books needed for the course, and place those books into a shopping cart. That is the kind of boring admin task most people hate doing, so you can see why Google wants AI to take over the grind.

The system also becomes more interesting when it can use what is on your screen or in an image. Google described a travel situation where someone sees a brochure at a hotel and asks Gemini to find a similar tour on Expedia. For SEA travellers, that kind of feature could be useful if it works properly, especially when planning trips across Japan, Korea, Thailand or even local cuti-cuti Malaysia getaways.

For Malaysian Android users, the biggest question is not whether this sounds cool. It is whether it will be reliable enough for daily use. Our phones already handle everything from Grab rides and Touch ’n Go eWallet to Shopee carts, banking apps, airline check-ins and food delivery. If Gemini Intelligence can reduce the small repetitive steps without messing things up, that is genuinely useful. But if it taps the wrong thing, selects the wrong item or misunderstands context, confirm memang people will stop trusting it fast.

Google is clearly aware that giving an AI agent control over your phone sounds a bit sus. The company says Gemini Intelligence will only start a task after the user tells it to. If a task involves buying something, the user still has to approve the purchase. Users will also be able to manage data access through Android’s usual permissions menu, and a progress bar lets them stop Gemini while it is working.

That control layer matters. In Malaysia and SEA, where mobile wallets, banking apps and shopping platforms are heavily used, nobody wants an AI randomly making decisions with real money involved. Even if purchase confirmation is required, users will still want clear visibility on what Gemini is doing before they trust it with sensitive workflows.

Google plans to roll out Gemini Intelligence first on recently released Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones. That makes sense globally, though Pixel availability in Malaysia has always been less straightforward than Samsung’s mainstream presence. For local users, Samsung Galaxy phones are likely the more realistic first taste of this feature.

The bigger challenge is proving that this is more than a flashy demo. Most phone apps are already designed to be easy, and people can book rides, buy items or manage bookings pretty quickly once they know the flow. Gemini Intelligence needs to be faster, safer and more consistent than doing it yourself. Otherwise, it becomes another AI feature people try once, then forget in the settings menu.

Still, if Google gets this right, Android could shift from being a phone you control app-by-app into something closer to a proper digital assistant. Not just answering questions, but actually doing the boring parts for you. That is a big deal — but only if the agent can earn trust.
