League of Legends Season 2 is a major shake-up, with Arena rebuilt and WASD heading into Ranked
League of Legends Season 2 is looking like one of Riot's biggest gameplay resets in a while. Instead of just dropping a few balance changes and calling it a day, the developer is reworking how players build, move, and even queue into side modes, with the changes arriving as part of Patch 26.9.
For players in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia, this is the kind of update that could genuinely change the day-to-day League experience. Whether you're the sort who only logs in for Arena with friends or you're grinding Ranked after work, Season 2 looks built around experimentation.
Arena is getting its biggest overhaul yet
The headline change is Arena, which is no longer sticking to one familiar formula. Riot is turning it into a rotating, event-style mode, so each run should feel less predictable than the current version.
Three formats are planned for the season:
- 3x6 Arena, with six teams of three replacing the current eight-team setup
- Bravery Arena, which restricts champion and augment choices for higher-risk runs
- Swift Arena, a faster version that keeps the four teams of two format many players already know
A fresh map called Petricite Grove is also joining the pool, and it comes with mining bombs. Existing Arena maps are being updated too.
Riot is also expanding the mode's systems with Augment Levels, which let players upgrade augments into stronger and more complex versions. On top of that, Season 2 adds more than 30 new augments and over 20 reworked Guests of Honor, including disruptive effects tied to champions such as Shaco and Nocturne.
For SEA players who usually jump into League in stacks, that could make Arena a much bigger social mode this season, especially with more variation between runs.
Old keystones are back, and Riot wants weirder builds
Season 2 is also reviving some classic keystones. Riot's Phroxzon has already teased the return of Deathfire Touch and Stormraider's Surge, with Stormraider's Surge taking over from Phase Rush as a movement-focused option.
That fits Riot's wider direction for this season. The studio is openly pushing for more build variety and less rigid "correct" play. The examples mentioned include off-meta ideas like:
- AP Ezreal
- ADC Kennen
- Attack speed Xin Zhao
Itemisation is being refreshed as well. Riot says players can expect new starting items, omnivamp boots, and the removal of older choices to clean up the shop and open different build paths.
That should matter for players here because off-meta experimentation has always had a strong following in our region. If Riot can make those picks feel less troll and more viable, solo queue could get a lot more creative, for better or worse.
WASD movement is officially entering Ranked
The other huge talking point is controls. After a longer testing period, Riot is bringing WASD movement into Ranked in Patch 26.9.
According to the developer, the alternate control style is now close enough to traditional point-and-click in terms of performance, with only a small gap in win rate. That was apparently enough to clear the way for ranked play.
To help with the adjustment, Riot is also adding champion-specific keybinds, so players can customise their setup depending on who they use.
This is a massive change for a game as old and established as League. It could also lower the barrier a bit for newer players who are more used to keyboard movement from other competitive games.
Shorter season, new story, and more quality-of-life updates
Season 2 will only last six patches instead of the usual eight, and Riot says Battle Pass progression will be adjusted to match the shorter timeline.
On the story side, the season heads to the outskirts of Demacia, where Vayne is hunting demons and digging into her own past. Riot plans to tell that story through motion comics released during the season.
Other updates coming in Season 2 include:
- improvements to top and mid lane role quests
- a new early surrender system aimed at disruptive behaviour
- planned Discord integration to make party management easier
Skins, dates, and the next champion
Cosmetics are also a big part of the rollout. Riot has confirmed Prestige skins for Shaco and LeBlanc, with Veigar arriving later. Other skins named so far include PROJECT: Quinn, Rain Shepherd Ivern, Breadsticks Irelia, and Spaghetti alla Vel'Koz.
Riot is also changing Battle Pass rewards. Non-Prestige skins will become direct purchases, while their Battle Pass slots will be replaced with themed loot orbs.
Two familiar features are also making a return soon after launch:
- Your Shop on May 5
- Blue Essence Emporium on May 13
Finally, Riot has confirmed that the next champion will be a mid-lane AP assassin, with speculation pointing to Locke.
If Riot lands this patch properly, Season 2 could feel less like a routine reset and more like a proper reintroduction to League, especially for returning players in Malaysia and the wider SEA region who want a reason to jump back in.
