New Super Smash Bros Could Reportedly Land As Early As 2027

A new Super Smash Bros project might be closer than expected, with games interviewer Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly claiming that Nintendo’s mega crossover fighter has something lined up within the next year or two.

Important disclaimer first, bro: Nintendo has not announced a new Smash game. No title, no trailer, no platform, no roster tease. For now, this is still insider chatter. But because Smash is basically fighting game royalty — and because Reilly has built a reputation through developer interviews — the rumour is already getting fans heated.

What was actually said?

Reilly posted on X that several of his favourite franchises have major things coming soon, mentioning GTA 6, Metroid, Super Smash Bros, and Zelda. In that post, he specifically pointed to Smash arriving “in the next year or two”, which puts the window around 2027 or 2028.

When someone asked if he genuinely had information about those projects, he replied with a simple “of course” and a smiley. He did not share a title, studio details, roster info, or whether this is a brand-new Smash game.

He later added that there are multiple possibilities for what a 2027 or 2028 Smash release could be. It might be a Switch 2 edition of Super Smash Bros Ultimate, or even an older game like Melee or Brawl coming through Nintendo Switch Online. In other words, don’t immediately assume “Smash 6” with a fully rebuilt roster.

Why Sakurai matters so much

The reason fans are paying attention is Masahiro Sakurai. After stepping away for a while and running a game development YouTube channel, Sakurai has previously said he struggles to imagine Smash without him. He also suggested that the series is so important to Nintendo that another entry felt likely.

Since then, Sakurai returned to development and worked on Kirby Air Riders, described as a passion project. Reilly previously claimed that Sakurai agreed to return for another Smash only if Nintendo allowed him to make Kirby Air Riders first.

That lines up with why a new Smash is such a complicated beast. This series is not just Mario punching Link. Smash Ultimate pulled in characters from across gaming history, including Sephiroth, Kazuya, Steve, and Sora. Every third-party fighter means licensing, negotiations, approvals, and a lot of industry goodwill. Sakurai’s name carries serious weight there.

Why Malaysia and SEA fans should care

For Malaysian and SEA players, Smash has always sat in a weird but beloved space. It is not as dominant here as Mobile Legends, Valorant, or Tekken, but every anime convention, gaming meetup, and campus event still has that one corner where people are yelling over Final Destination.

A Switch 2 version of Smash Ultimate would be massive for the local scene because it keeps the existing roster intact while making the game easier to sell to new players. If Nintendo goes for a full sequel, though, the big question becomes roster cuts. Smash Ultimate’s “everyone is here” approach set expectations insanely high. Anything smaller may trigger war in the group chats, no cap.

There is also the esports angle. Smash has always had a passionate grassroots competitive scene, but Nintendo’s relationship with competitive Smash has been complicated. A new release could refresh local tournaments across Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines — assuming Nintendo supports it properly and the community gets clean hardware access.

So, new game or upgraded Ultimate?

Right now, the safest read is this: something Smash-related may be planned for the next Nintendo hardware cycle, but nobody outside the project knows publicly what form it will take.

A deluxe Ultimate port makes commercial sense. A full reboot would be exciting but risky. Older games on NSO would make longtime fans happy, especially Melee diehards, but that would not feel like the same “new Smash” moment.

Until Nintendo speaks, keep expectations steady. Still, if Smash really returns around 2027, Switch 2 could be heading into a ridiculous few years.
