Windrose XP guide: the fastest way to level up without wasting time

If your Windrose character feels stuck, here’s the big thing to know early: this game does not hand out XP the way most players expect.

You can fight enemies, craft items, and stay busy for ages, but that alone will not level you up. In Windrose, the main XP sources are quests and looting points of interest (POIs). That is what grows your level, gives you more stat points, and unlocks extra Talents to shape your build.

So yeah, if you have been doing the usual RPG grind and seeing almost nothing happen, you are not crazy. That is just how the system works.

Quests are your first proper XP source

The most direct way to earn XP is by progressing through main quests and clearing any side or tutorial quests that show up in your Journal.

Main story steps are especially important because they do more than just award XP. They also move your progression forward and help unlock better gear. One example mentioned in the current progression path is defeating Captain Thomas Richards.

The important bit is this: only proper quests listed in your Journal count for XP.

That means some side content that looks useful, like Blackbeard Crew Maps, may still be worth doing for loot, but they will not help your level. If your goal is pure progression, keep an eye on the Journal first.

Early game leveling mostly comes from POIs

Because there are not that many quests, especially at the start, the real leveling grind comes from exploring islands and clearing points of interest.

Each island has a few question mark markers that can turn out to be pirate camps, ruins, outposts, and other locations. Once you discover one, the map will show how many chests are there and how much XP the spot gives.

Here is the catch: you do not get that XP just for visiting.

You only get the reward after looting every chest in that POI.

That makes chest hunting way more important than speedrunning through the area. If you miss one box in some random corner, you are leaving XP behind.

Hidden chests are the real trap

Some POIs are straightforward, but others hide their loot pretty well.

A few examples players should watch for:

  • Ancient Ruins can have a cellar with extra chests.
  • Some chests are hidden under debris.
  • Buried loot can be identified by shining particles, and you will need a pickaxe to dig it up.
  • Traveler’s Camps may give clues through notes.
  • Shipwrecks can have one or two chests sitting on deck.
  • Pirate-themed POIs often spread their chests across multiple rooms or camp sections.

Basically, jangan main sapu and leave too early. Do a proper sweep before moving on.

Chests do not respawn, but some materials do

One more useful detail: the chests in POIs do not respawn. Once cleared, that XP source is done.

However, some materials and supplies do come back later, including ingredients like Healing Herbs used for Healing Potions. So even if a location is no longer good for XP, it can still be worth revisiting for resources.

Best leveling tip if you want less wasted travel

If you are planning a longer exploration run, bring enough materials to build a Tent and a Fast Travel Point.

That makes a big difference when you are clearing islands one by one, especially if something goes wrong mid-run. For players in Malaysia and the wider SEA crowd who usually prefer efficient farming over aimless wandering, this is the practical play: set up smart, clear every chest, and move on with minimal backtracking.

Windrose’s leveling system is a bit unusual, but once you understand it, the route is pretty clear. Do your Journal quests, fully clear POIs, and stop expecting mobs or crafting to carry your XP bar.
