Overview
Beast of Reincarnation is an action role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Fictions. It is described as a one-person, one-dog action role-playing game, centred on Emma the Sealer and her companion Koo. Emma is an 18-year-old woman with blight powers, while Koo is a stray dog who travels with her.
The game is part of Game Freak’s work outside its flagship Pokémon role-playing games. Development began in 2020 through the studio’s internal Gear Project initiative, which supports new intellectual property. After initial prototyping, Game Freak handled creative direction and overall project management while working with several external partners because of the game’s larger scope.
Gameplay
Beast of Reincarnation focuses heavily on combat. Players face a range of enemies, including oversized mutant creatures and robots. Emma can manipulate plants to traverse the world and fight enemies, using her blight powers as part of both movement and combat.
The combat system has been compared to other action role-playing games such as Black Myth: Wukong and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
Setting
Beast of Reincarnation is set in Japan in the year 4026. The story follows Emma the Sealer and Koo as they navigate a post-apocalyptic land ruined by corruption. Their journey takes place in a version of Japan where the natural world has been blighted by a corrupted creature.
The game’s art style and story have been compared to Studio Ghibli works such as Princess Mononoke.
Release
Beast of Reincarnation was released on August 4, 2026, for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
The game was first announced in May 2023 under the working title Project Bloom as a partnership between Game Freak and Private Division. At that time, details were limited to a projected 2026 release, director Furushima, and concept art showing a lone woman in a forest.
It was publicly revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2025 with a gameplay trailer confirming the title Beast of Reincarnation and a 2026 release window. Fictions later confirmed the August 4, 2026 launch during PlayStation’s State of Play in February 2026.
