Overview
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is a 2026 first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It is the twenty-third installment in the Call of Duty series and the fourth and final entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series, following Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III from 2023.
Gameplay
The game comprises three main modes: a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer and DMZ, the extraction shooter mode returning from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
Multiplayer launches with 12 core 6v6 maps. Returning modes include Gunfight, which has a dedicated map pool, and Big War, which features large-scale maps. A new map, Kill Block, changes its layout as matches progress, with more than 500 possible configurations.
The gameplay system removes hipfire bloom, the mechanic that reduces shot accuracy when firing from the hip. Movement additions allow players to hang and shimmy along edges and pipes.
In DMZ, 20 squads of up to three players deploy into an exclusion zone to gather loot, complete objectives and attempt to exfiltrate. Activities include narrative-focused story missions, randomly generated Dynamic Operations and free exploration. Players encounter hostile NPCs and other players. Killing players raises notoriety, marking the attacker’s presence on the map.
The Forward Operating Base serves as a preparation hub for configuring loadouts, crafting items and interacting with vendors. Individual Operator trait trees provide permanent progression through skills and bonuses suited to different play styles. Dynamic weather, including rain and snow, intensifies throughout a match.
Setting
The campaign primarily centres on a war between North and South Korea, with additional missions taking place in New York, Paris and Mumbai.
Its opening takes place in October 2026. South Korean Marine Private First Class Park Hyun-Jun witnesses an EMP attack on Hajin, immediately before a full-scale invasion by the North Korean Army. Park belongs to Sierra-1, a squad that includes South Korean Marines and a US Marine corporal.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 was released on October 23, 2026, for Windows, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
