Gears of War: E-Day

Overview

Gears of War: E-Day is a 2026 third-person shooter and the sixth main installment in the Gears of War series. It is set fourteen years before the events of the original game and centers on Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde first came from beneath Sera and attacked humanity. The game follows young COG veterans Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago alongside fellow soldiers Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes as Bravo Squad forms during the invasion of Kalona.

Gameplay

The game is played from an over-the-shoulder perspective and builds on the series’ cover-based combat. Its redesigned movement system adds greater mobility and fluidity, with traversal options such as sliding from a sprint, jumping across gaps, climbing vehicles and structures, and using low-ground cover. Missions include linear combat sequences and larger open districts that allow objectives to be approached from multiple directions.

Combat focuses on battles against the Locust Horde, including Drones, Boomers, Wretches, Corpsers, Reavers, and new creatures from the Hollows. Emergence Holes return as dynamic battlefield events and can be destroyed with explosives. Destructible environments can also change encounters. New weapons include the Gutpuncher grenade launcher and Incinerator shotgun, while the Chainsaw Lancer appears in an origin-story role. Active Reload returns with a redesigned interface, and some weapons support shell-by-shell reloading.

The campaign supports four-player online cooperative play and two-player split-screen co-op on consoles. Competitive multiplayer includes 4v4 team-based modes, while Horde Siege is a twelve-player cooperative mode with three four-player squads completing objectives, defending locations, and surviving Locust attacks.

Setting

Gears of War: E-Day takes place on Sera shortly after the Pendulum Wars, during a fragile period of peace as many COG soldiers are being demobilized. The campaign is set in Kalona, a major industrial city shaped by decades of wartime Imulsion production. Emergence Day begins when the Locust Horde launches a surprise invasion from beneath the planet.

Release

Gears of War: E-Day was developed by The Coalition and People Can Fly, and published by Xbox Game Studios. It received premium early access on October 1, 2026, before its official release on October 6, 2026, for Windows and Xbox Series X/S.
