Overview
Gothic 1 Remake, also known as Gothic Remake, is a 2026 action role-playing game developed by Alkimia Interactive and published by THQ Nordic. It is a remake of Gothic, the 2001 game developed by Piranha Bytes.
The remake was developed after THQ Nordic acquired Piranha Bytes in 2019. Piranha Bytes declined to make another Gothic game, and Alkimia Interactive was later founded in Barcelona to develop the remake. Some original Gothic developers joined Alkimia, including the composer, a dialogue writer, and a programmer.
The remake is based on the original game world, with a larger and more detailed version of that world. Development focused on non-player character behaviour, character routines, controls, user interface, combat, skill systems, and expanded narrative content. Kai Rosenkranz, composer of the original Gothic soundtrack, returned for the remake and created both reinterpreted and new music.
Gameplay
Gothic 1 Remake is an action role-playing game played from a third-person perspective in a fantasy open world. The player controls a nameless prisoner and navigates the world without a minimap, as in the original Gothic.
The character starts without any skills. Combat and skill systems were based on the original game. Lock picking was developed similarly to the original, though it is presented differently. The remake also includes an adjustable third-person camera angle and adjustable balance or difficulty.
The game world is reported to be 10–30% larger than the original, with denser locations, new quests based on camp affiliation, expanded quests, and revised puzzles with new interactions. Weapon smithing and cooking systems were expanded for the remake.
Setting
The game begins with the player character as a prisoner sent to the Valley of Mines, a penal mining colony. The colony is surrounded by a magical barrier.
Release
Gothic 1 Remake was released on 5 June 2026 for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
The first trailer was released in August 2022. Gameplay was first shown in a trailer in August 2024, and a demo was presented at Gamescom that same month. Since February 2025, a demo titled Nyras Prologue has been available on Steam.
The game received mixed reviews from critics and sold half a million units within its first week of release.
