Overview
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a 2026 action-adventure game developed and published by Capcom. It is the first mainline installment in the Onimusha series since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, which released in 2006. The game follows samurai Miyamoto Musashi, modeled after Toshiro Mifune, as he faces rival swordsmen, demons, and other supernatural threats.
Gameplay
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is played from a third-person perspective. Musashi primarily fights with a sword, using it to strike enemies, parry attacks, and deflect incoming projectiles. He can also enter a guard stance that blocks attacks from all directions.
Striking and parrying reduce an opponent’s stamina, opening them up to Break Issen, a move that executes enemies by dismembering them. Consecutive parries or dodges grant combat buffs, allowing Musashi to quickly execute enemies in succession or unleash a multi-hit attack. The environment can also be used in combat, including flipping a table to use as a temporary shield.
Musashi carries a sentient gauntlet that consumes the souls of defeated enemies. Yellow souls restore health, red souls are used to buy upgrades, and blue souls allow the use of Oni Armaments, special weapons that deal heavy damage. Hitting enemies with Oni Armaments provides yellow souls. Against boss characters, Break Issen does not instantly execute them, but lets players choose between dealing massive damage or gaining more souls.
The gauntlet also enables Oni Vision, which reveals demons and enemies in an area. The game is largely linear, with open areas and side quests.
Setting
The game is set in a dark fantasy version of Kyoto during the Edo period. In feudal Japan, wandering samurai Miyamoto Musashi becomes caught in conflict involving rival swordsmen and supernatural creatures called Genma.
Release
Onimusha: Way of the Sword was released on September 4, 2026 for Windows, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Capcom developed and published the game.
