Elden Ring Beginner's Guide — Everything You Need to Know
Last Updated: March 30, 2025
What Is Elden Ring?
Elden Ring is an open-world action RPG developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki with worldbuilding by George R.R. Martin, it combines FromSoftware's signature challenging combat with a vast open world called the Lands Between. Unlike the linear structure of Dark Souls, Elden Ring lets you explore freely, tackle bosses in any order, and approach the story at your own pace. If a boss feels impossible, the game is telling you to explore elsewhere, level up, and come back stronger. This design makes it the most accessible FromSoftware title while retaining the depth veterans expect.
Character Creation and Class Selection
Your starting class determines initial stats and equipment but does not lock you into a playstyle permanently. Vagabond is the safest beginner pick — high Vigor, a longsword, and a sturdy shield. Samurai starts with the Uchigatana, one of the best weapons in the game, plus a longbow. Astrologer is ideal for magic users, beginning with ranged spells that trivialize early encounters. Confessor offers a melee-faith hybrid with a decent shield.
Avoid the Wretch unless you want the challenge of starting at level one with nothing. For your Keepsake gift, pick the Golden Seed — an extra healing flask charge is extremely valuable early on.
Exploration — Don't Go Straight to Stormveil
The most important beginner advice: do not rush to Stormveil Castle. The gatekeeper boss Margit is a level check — arriving at level 5-10 means repeated deaths. Instead, explore Limgrave thoroughly. Visit the Church of Elleh for a Crafting Kit, clear Gatefront Ruins to unlock Torrent (your horse) and the leveling system, and explore the catacombs and caves scattered across the region. Head south to the Weeping Peninsula for manageable content and solid rewards.
Seek out golden Erdtree saplings for Golden Seeds (more flask charges) and Sacred Tears in churches (stronger heals). Grab map fragments from stone pillars to reveal the world map. Talk to every NPC multiple times. Return to Margit at level 25-30, and the fight will feel entirely different.
Combat Fundamentals
Every action costs stamina. Running out mid-fight means death.
Dodge Rolling grants invincibility frames during the animation. Roll into attacks, not away. Stay below 70% equip load for a medium roll — going above gives you a sluggish fat roll with fewer i-frames. Guard Counters let you press heavy attack immediately after blocking a hit, dealing massive stance damage. This is devastating against humanoid enemies and many bosses. Stance Breaking is your most reliable damage strategy — charged heavies, guard counters, and jumping attacks fill an invisible poise meter. When it breaks, the enemy staggers for a critical hit.
Be patient. Land one or two hits per opening. Getting greedy with extra swings is the primary cause of death for new players.
Leveling and Stats — Vigor Is King
Level up at Sites of Grace using Runes (currency from enemies). The single most important stat early on is Vigor. It increases HP with generous scaling up to 40 points. Aim for 30 Vigor before Stormveil, 40 by midgame. Players who pump damage stats first will die in one or two hits to bosses — this is the most common mistake in the entire game.
Mind fuels spells and weapon arts (magic users need it; melee can ignore it). Endurance provides stamina and equip load — a few points help, but do not over-invest. Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, Arcane are damage stats — check your weapon's scaling letters and invest accordingly, but always after Vigor.
Weapon Upgrading with Smithing Stones
Upgrading weapons is far more impactful than leveling stats. A +6 weapon with base stats out-damages a +0 weapon with 40 in its scaling stat. Regular weapons use Smithing Stones (tiers 1-8, multiple per level). Special weapons use Somber Smithing Stones (tiers 1-9, one per level). Visit blacksmith Hewg at the Roundtable Hold to upgrade. Explore mines (orange circles on the map) for stone deposits. Later, Bell Bearings let you buy unlimited stones from the Twin Maiden Husks.
Spirit Ashes Summoning
Spirit Ashes are AI companions for boss fights and certain areas. Summon them when you see the monument icon on screen. Get the Spirit Calling Bell from Renna at the Church of Elleh at night. The Lone Wolf Ashes draw aggro well. The Jellyfish poisons enemies and is surprisingly tanky. The Mimic Tear (found in Nokron) copies your character and is one of the strongest summons. These are a core mechanic, not a crutch — many encounters are balanced around them.
Crafting and NPC Quests
Buy the Crafting Kit early. Fire pots, status-curing boluses, and throwing knives are genuinely useful consumables. Collect cookbooks throughout the world to unlock recipes. NPC quests have no markers — characters appear at specific locations and move based on progression. Talk to everyone until dialogue repeats. Key questlines (Ranni, Alexander, Blaidd, Millicent) offer powerful rewards but are easy to miss without occasional guide consultation.
Tips for Beginners
Spend Runes when you can level up — Runes on your character are Runes you can lose on death. Do not sell weapons or armor; you may want them for future builds. Use Torrent for overworld travel and mounted combat. Mark your map with custom icons for locations to revisit. If something feels too hard, leave and return later.
Common Mistakes
Ignoring Vigor is mistake number one. Fighting every enemy wastes time — many overworld groups are meant to be ridden past. Not exploring means missing weapons, levels, and upgrades that make the main path far easier. Hoarding consumables wastes their value — use fire pots and greases in tough fights. Selling equipment for Runes is almost never worthwhile.
SEA Tips — Online and Offline
Elden Ring works perfectly offline. Online mode shows player messages, bloodstains, and summon signs for co-op. SEA players on the Asia server get stable connections for cooperative play. Craft Furlcalling Finger Remedies from Erdleaf Flowers to see summon signs. Local Discord and Facebook communities are active for finding co-op partners and build advice. Play the game on your terms — solo, with summons, or with friends. The Lands Between rewards every approach.
