Hades 2 Beginner's Guide — Everything You Need to Know
Last Updated: March 30, 2025
What Is Hades 2?
Hades 2 is a roguelike action game developed by Supergiant Games. You play as Melinoe, Princess of the Underworld and daughter of Hades and Persephone, on a mission to defeat the Titan of Time, Chronos, who has seized control of the Underworld and imprisoned the gods. Each run takes you through procedurally arranged combat rooms, and when you die, you return to your hub area permanently stronger. Death is not failure — it is the core progression mechanic. Every run teaches enemy patterns, advances the story through character conversations, and unlocks new abilities. If you have never played a roguelike, Hades 2 is one of the finest entry points the genre has ever produced.
The Crossroads — Your Hub
Between runs, Melinoe returns to the Crossroads, where allies have gathered to fight Chronos. This hub is where story unfolds, relationships develop, and permanent upgrades are acquired.
Incantations are recipes crafted at the cauldron using gathered materials. They permanently unlock new mechanics — weapon aspects, gathering spots, entirely new areas. Always check for available incantations after collecting new resources. The Hot Springs are for NPC conversations that advance storylines and sometimes hint at gameplay secrets. The Garden lets you plant seeds that grow over multiple runs — always plant before starting a run. Schelemeus' Training Room offers combat practice without consequences. Talk to every NPC regularly; relationships unlock story content and occasional gameplay bonuses.
Weapons — The Nocturnal Arms
Each weapon fundamentally changes how Melinoe plays. Witch's Staff: Your starter weapon, balanced melee with a strong spinning special. Beginner-friendly and effective throughout the game. Sister Blades: Fast dual daggers for aggressive, close-range combat. High damage but keeps you in danger. Moonstone Axe: Slow, devastating swings that reward patience and precise timing. Umbral Flames: A ranged option for players who prefer fighting from a distance. Argent Skull: A thrown projectile weapon with a unique playstyle unlike anything else.
Each weapon has Aspects — alternate forms unlocked through progression that modify behavior. A weapon that feels weak initially might become your favorite with the right Aspect and Boon synergy.
The Boon System — Gifts from the Gods
During runs, doors marked with Olympian symbols offer Boons — god-powered abilities for that run. Each god has a theme: Zeus gives lightning, Aphrodite inflicts weakness, Poseidon deals knockback, Demeter brings freeze, Hephaestus adds explosions. The key to powerful runs is focusing on two or three gods whose Boons synergize rather than collecting randomly.
When you carry Boons from specific god pairs, you may unlock Duo Boons — rare, extremely powerful combined abilities. Your four combat actions (Attack, Special, Cast, Dash) can each receive a Boon. Prioritize filling these slots early, then seek supporting Boons that amplify your build. Omega abilities (hold the button to charge) consume Magick but deal massive damage — many Boons enhance these charged versions.
Arcana Cards and the Grasp System
Arcana Cards are passive bonuses equipped before each run — extra health, death defiance (extra lives), damage boosts, resource bonuses. They are unlocked and upgraded with Psyche, Bones, and other materials. The Grasp system limits how many cards you can equip simultaneously. You start with limited Grasp, so increasing it through incantations and upgrades is one of the most important progression milestones. Prioritize survivability cards early — extra health and death defiance carry you further than raw damage when you are still learning.
Gathering Resources Between Runs
Tools like the pickaxe, fishing rod, and shovel — unlocked through incantations — let you collect materials from gathering spots between runs. These resources fuel incantations, Arcana upgrades, and other progression systems. Make gathering routine: tend the garden, fish available spots, and collect surface resources before each run. This passive material income prevents progression walls and adds up significantly over time.
Tips for Beginners
Death is progress. Dying unlocks new dialogue, NPC conversations, and often new incantations. Bad runs still advance the game. Use your Cast. New players forget about it, but many Boons transform Cast into a primary damage tool. Dash generously. You have invincibility frames during dashes — dash through attacks instead of running from them. Save Magick for tough fights. Entering a boss encounter with full Magick gives a powerful burst damage advantage. Equip Keepsakes strategically. A Keepsake from the god you want guarantees their Boons appear in the first biome, kickstarting your build. Experiment with your Hex ability. The Hex gauge fills as you deal damage and unleashes a powerful attack when activated — different Hexes suit different builds.
Common Mistakes
Hoarding resources is the biggest trap. Materials are meant to be spent on incantations and Arcana upgrades immediately. The game provides a steady resource flow, so holding everything back only slows progression. Ignoring Arcana Cards is another major error — the difference between a run with well-chosen cards and one without is enormous, especially early on.
Restarting runs because of unwanted Boons is counterproductive. Learning to make any Boon combination work is a core skill, and seemingly weak starts often become dominant builds once the right pieces appear. Many of the best runs begin with Boons you would never have chosen deliberately. Not talking to NPCs between runs means missing story content, relationship progression, and direct hints about mechanics and encounters.
Embracing the Loop
Hades 2 is designed for many runs over many hours. The story unfolds gradually through repeated conversations. New weapons, mechanics, and areas unlock steadily through incantations and relationship progress. Do not feel pressured to win quickly — the journey through repeated attempts, each slightly different and stronger, is the entire point. After five to ten runs, enemy patterns click, Boon synergies become intuitive, and the game reveals itself as one of the finest roguelikes ever made. Embrace each death, talk to everyone, try every weapon, and trust the loop.
