PUBG Mobile Beginner's Guide — Everything You Need to Know
Last Updated: March 30, 2025
What Is PUBG Mobile?
PUBG Mobile is a free-to-play battle royale shooter where 100 players drop onto a large map, scavenge for weapons and equipment, and fight to be the last player or team standing. Originally released in 2018 as a mobile adaptation of the landmark PC game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, it has grown into one of the most popular competitive games in the world, with a particularly massive following across Southeast Asia. The game is available on both Android and iOS devices, and an official PC emulator called Gameloop allows players to play on desktop as well.
The premise is simple — survive — but mastering the game requires an understanding of gunplay mechanics, map knowledge, positioning, and team coordination. Whether you are playing solo, in a duo, or as part of a four-player squad, every match is a unique experience shaped by where you land, what loot you find, and how the safe zone shifts across the map. This guide covers everything you need to know to go from your first match to consistently reaching the late game.
Landing and Looting
Your match begins aboard a plane that flies across the map on a randomized path. Choosing where to jump is one of the most important decisions you will make each game. As a beginner, avoid high-traffic locations like Pochinki, School, Military Base, and Bootcamp — these areas attract experienced players looking for early fights. Instead, target mid-tier loot locations slightly off the flight path, such as Severny, Zharki, or the smaller compounds scattered around the map edges. These spots offer enough loot to get geared without the immediate pressure of multiple enemy squads.
When looting, prioritize in this order: a weapon with ammunition, a vest and helmet, healing items, then attachments and scopes. An assault rifle like the M416, SCAR-L, or AKM should be your primary goal. Pick up a backpack as soon as you find one to increase your carrying capacity. Enable auto-pickup in your settings to speed up the looting process, but be mindful of what it collects — you do not want your inventory clogged with attachments for weapons you are not carrying.
On SEA servers, popular drop locations tend to be extremely contested. Pochinki and Bootcamp on Sanhok are the most infamous hot drop zones in the region. Learning the loot spawns at two or three quieter locations on each map will give you a significant advantage while you build your fundamentals.
Combat Mechanics
PUBG Mobile features realistic ballistics with bullet drop and travel time, meaning you need to lead your shots at longer distances and aim above distant targets. Each weapon has a unique recoil pattern that can be learned and controlled through practice. Spend time in the training grounds to familiarize yourself with how different guns handle — the difference between spraying an M416 and an AKM is substantial.
Firing modes matter. Most assault rifles offer single-fire and full-auto modes, and some have burst options. Use single-fire or burst for engagements beyond 50 meters and switch to full-auto for close-range fights. Learn to toggle between modes quickly based on the situation.
Gyroscope aiming is a feature unique to the mobile version that uses your device's motion sensors for aim adjustment. While it has a steep learning curve, enabling gyroscope for scoped aiming and gradually increasing the sensitivity as you improve will elevate your accuracy significantly. Most top-tier players on SEA servers use gyroscope, and it is considered a near-essential skill for competitive play.
Peeking is another critical mechanic. Use the lean buttons to expose as little of your body as possible when engaging from behind cover. This reduces the target you present to enemies and can be the difference between winning and losing a firefight.
Map Awareness and the Zone
The play zone — the shrinking safe area marked by a white circle on the map — is the driving force behind every match. A blue energy field closes in on areas outside the zone, dealing increasing damage as the match progresses. In the early game, zone damage is minimal and you can survive outside it briefly. In the late game, being caught outside the zone is almost always fatal.
Always keep one eye on the map and the zone timer. Plan your rotations early rather than waiting for the zone to force you into a panicked sprint across open ground. Use vehicles for long rotations but abandon them before reaching the final circles, as engine noise gives away your position. Stick to terrain that offers natural cover — ridgelines, tree lines, and compounds — and avoid running across open fields whenever possible.
Understanding circle rotations is an advanced skill that comes with experience. Over time, you will develop an instinct for where the zone is likely to shift and can position yourself advantageously before it moves.
Squad Play
PUBG Mobile is at its best when played as a squad. Communication is the single most important factor in squad success. Use voice chat or the game's ping system to call out enemy positions, share loot, and coordinate movements. When engaging a squad, focus fire on one enemy at a time to create a numbers advantage quickly rather than spreading damage across multiple targets.
Assign roles within your squad. One player should carry a sniper or DMR for long-range picks, one should focus on close-range aggression with an SMG or shotgun secondary, and at least one player should carry extra healing supplies and smoke grenades for support. The fourth player can flex based on the situation.
When a teammate is knocked, do not rush to revive immediately. Secure the area first, eliminate or suppress the threat, then revive behind cover with smoke grenade protection. Careless revives in the open are one of the most common ways entire squads get wiped.
Common Beginner Mistakes
Looting for too long. Many new players spend excessive time searching for perfect gear. Once you have a decent weapon, armor, and healing, start playing for position rather than continuing to loot.
Ignoring the zone. Getting caught in the blue zone because you were focused on a fight or looting is a preventable death. Always respect the timer.
Standing still while shooting. Even in a firefight, staying mobile makes you harder to hit. Crouch, strafe, and peek rather than standing in the open trading shots.
Playing without headphones. Audio is critical in PUBG Mobile. Footsteps, gunshots, and vehicle sounds provide essential information about enemy positions. Always play with headphones and learn to identify the direction and distance of sounds.
Hot dropping every game. While hot drops are exciting, dying in the first two minutes teaches you very little. Mix in quieter drops where you can practice looting efficiently, rotating smartly, and taking mid-game fights on your terms.
Ranked Mode
Ranked mode in PUBG Mobile uses a tiered system from Bronze through Conqueror. Your rank is determined by Rank Points earned through match placement and kills, with points deducted for early eliminations. The system rewards consistent top-ten finishes more heavily than high-kill games that end in mid-match deaths, so survival should be your priority when pushing rank.
Each season lasts approximately two months, after which ranks reset partially. Reaching higher tiers unlocks season-exclusive rewards and places you in lobbies with increasingly skilled opponents. On SEA servers, the competition in Diamond and above is particularly fierce, with many players using advanced techniques like jiggle peeking, quick scoping, and coordinated rushes.
To climb efficiently, play during off-peak hours when lobbies may be slightly less competitive, squad up with reliable teammates rather than relying on random fills, and focus on positioning over aggression. A consistent top-five finish with a few kills will earn more points than a 10-kill game that ends in fifteenth place.
Growing as a Player
Improvement in PUBG Mobile comes from deliberate practice rather than simply grinding matches. Spend at least fifteen minutes in the training grounds before each session warming up your aim and spray control. Review your gameplay — many devices allow screen recording — to identify positioning mistakes and missed opportunities.
Watch competitive play from SEA tournaments like the PUBG Mobile Pro League to learn advanced strategies. Teams like Bigetron RA, Alter Ego, and The Infinity demonstrate world-class rotations, utility usage, and team coordination that you can adapt to your own gameplay. Content creators from the region also produce educational content in multiple languages that breaks down high-level concepts in accessible ways.
Join a clan or community group to find regular teammates. Consistent squad play with the same group of players will improve your coordination far faster than random matchmaking. Many SEA communities organize scrimmages and amateur tournaments that provide competitive experience without the pressure of official ranked play.
Set specific goals for each session rather than simply queueing match after match. Focus on one skill at a time — perhaps today you work on recoil control with the AKM, or this week you practice only aggressive pushes. Targeted practice compounds over time, and within a few weeks of focused effort, you will notice a meaningful jump in your performance and rank.
