Discord Nitro is suddenly looking a lot more tempting for gamers. Xbox and Discord have teamed up on a new Nitro Rewards perk that gives Nitro subscribers access to a trimmed-down “starter edition” of Xbox Game Pass.
Announced on May 11 through separate Xbox and Discord posts, the new benefit gives Nitro users a library of over 50 PC and console games that can be downloaded and played, plus 10 hours of cloud gaming. So yes, this is not the full-fat Game Pass Ultimate package, but for people who already live inside Discord daily, it is a pretty solid extra.
Some of the confirmed games in this starter Game Pass lineup include Fallout 4, Stardew Valley, DayZ, Deep Rock Galactic, Overcooked 2, and Grounded. That is honestly a decent mix: one huge open-world RPG, one forever-comfy farming sim, co-op chaos, survival, and some squad-friendly multiplayer picks.
For Malaysian and SEA players, the Discord angle is the important part. Discord is already where a lot of local gaming communities hang out — from Valorant stacks and Dota groups to anime servers and uni friend squads. Bundling games into Nitro means Microsoft is not just trying to sell Game Pass through the Xbox app anymore; it is putting the service where gamers are already chatting, streaming, and organising weekend sessions.
Discord says the benefit is rolling out to Nitro members over the coming weeks, so don’t panic if it doesn’t appear in your account immediately. If you are already paying for premium Nitro, this is basically extra value on top of the usual profile cosmetics, upload perks, and server features. If you were only considering Nitro before, this might be the first update that makes the price easier to justify.
The pricing comparison is interesting too. Discord Nitro’s premium plan is listed at US$9.99 monthly, while Xbox’s existing Essential Game Pass tier is also US$9.99 per month. Since this starter edition is bundled into Nitro, Discord-heavy players could feel like they are getting two services in one, even if the Game Pass library here is smaller than Microsoft’s bigger tiers.
Xbox Game Pass subscribers are also getting something from the partnership. Microsoft says existing Game Pass users can expect Nitro-related benefits later this month, including a monthly allowance of 250 Discord Orbs, which can be redeemed for rewards inside Discord’s Shop.
This move also fits the bigger Xbox strategy right now. According to the report, new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma recently said in a leaked internal memo that Game Pass had become too expensive for players and needed to become more flexible. Xbox has already made price cuts, with Ultimate reportedly dropping from US$30 to US$22.99 and PC Game Pass moving from US$16.49 to US$13.99 per month.
So this Discord bundle feels like the next step: instead of pushing one expensive subscription at everyone, Xbox is experimenting with smaller entry points and partner perks. For Malaysia, where players are usually very price-sensitive and always comparing value across Steam sales, mobile top-ups, console subs, and battle passes, that flexibility matters.
The real test will be the game rotation and regional rollout. If the starter library keeps adding genuinely playable titles — not just filler — this could become a nice gateway into Game Pass for casual players and Discord communities across SEA.
