Honor of Kings Expands into Southeast Asian Markets with Localized Content
Honor of Kings, the highest-grossing mobile game in China with over 100 million daily active users domestically, is making its most aggressive push into Southeast Asia to date. Publisher Level Infinite, Tencent's global games brand, has announced a comprehensive localization strategy that includes region-specific hero skins, cultural event tie-ins, and partnerships with local esports organizations across Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia.
The expansion puts Honor of Kings on a direct collision course with Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, the undisputed mobile MOBA king in Southeast Asia. To differentiate itself, Level Infinite is leaning heavily into production value and the game's deep roster of over 100 heroes. Localized content includes Thai-inspired hero designs and Bahasa Indonesia voice acting for key characters. The company has also committed to establishing a dedicated SEA esports circuit, with prize pools competitive enough to attract top-tier talent currently competing in MPL and other MLBB tournaments.
Early reception has been mixed but promising. Downloads surged in Thailand and the Philippines during the first month, though player retention remains the key metric to watch. MLBB's entrenched community, established esports ecosystem, and years of brand loyalty present a formidable barrier. Analysts caution that winning over SEA's mobile MOBA audience will require sustained investment measured in years, not months.
Tencent appears prepared for the long game. Internal documents suggest the company has allocated significant marketing budgets for SEA through 2025, with plans for influencer campaigns, university tournaments, and integration with popular regional streaming platforms. Whether Honor of Kings can carve out meaningful market share remains to be seen, but the competition is already pushing both titles to improve.
