Southeast Asia's Gaming Market Hits $8.6 Billion in 2024
Southeast Asia's gaming market has reached a staggering $8.6 billion in revenue for 2024, according to the latest report from Niko Partners. The figure represents a 9.2% year-over-year increase and cements the region as one of the fastest-growing gaming markets globally. Indonesia leads the charge with an estimated $2.1 billion in revenue, followed closely by Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
Mobile gaming continues to dominate the landscape, accounting for roughly 65% of total revenue across the region. Titles like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Free Fire, and Honor of Kings remain staples for hundreds of millions of players, while newer entries such as Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail have carved out significant audiences among younger demographics. The accessibility of affordable smartphones and competitive mobile data plans has been instrumental in lowering the barrier to entry for first-time gamers.
PC and console gaming, while smaller in market share, have shown impressive growth as well. The success of titles like Black Myth: Wukong has demonstrated that premium gaming experiences resonate with SEA audiences willing to invest in higher-end hardware. Internet cafes remain a critical touchpoint for PC gaming in markets like the Philippines and Vietnam, where home PC ownership is still growing.
Industry analysts project the SEA gaming market will surpass $12 billion by 2027, fueled by continued infrastructure investment, the expansion of 5G networks, and a young population with a median age under 30. Governments across the region are also increasingly recognizing esports and gaming as legitimate economic drivers, with Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines all announcing dedicated support programs for the sector.
