FromSoftware has never been content with delivering the expected, and Shadow of the Erdtree proves that the studio still has an extraordinary capacity to surprise. This is not a modest appendix to 2022's masterpiece — it is a sprawling, self-contained odyssey that rivals the scope of many full-priced releases. The Land of Shadow is dense, haunting, and absolutely relentless, and we loved nearly every punishing second of it.

Gameplay

The Scadutree Blessing system is Shadow of the Erdtree's boldest mechanical addition. Rather than relying solely on your base-game level, the DLC introduces its own parallel progression through collectible fragments scattered across the map. It is a clever design choice that levels the playing field for returning players and ensures that exploration is always rewarded. The eight new weapon categories — including the acrobatic Dryleaf Arts martial arts moveset and the devastating Great Katana — are some of the most creative FromSoftware has ever designed. Each one opens up entirely new build possibilities, and the Backhand Blade in particular became an instant favorite during our playthrough. Boss encounters are tuned to be punishingly difficult, with multi-phase fights that demand precision and adaptability. Messmer the Impaler and the final boss stand among the studio's greatest creations.

Graphics & Performance

The Land of Shadow is a visual feast. From the ashen fields of Gravesite Plain to the surreal geometry of the Abyssal Woods, every region carries a distinct atmosphere that rewards slow, deliberate exploration. Lighting in particular has been given noticeable attention — the way golden fog filters through the twisted branches of the Scadutree is genuinely arresting. On PS5 and Xbox Series X, performance holds steady in quality mode with only rare dips during the most particle-heavy encounters. The PC version, however, still carries some of the same optimization baggage from launch. Shader compilation stutters crop up in new areas, and frame pacing can be inconsistent on mid-range hardware. A day-one patch improved things, but it remains the weakest way to experience the expansion.

Story

The narrative of Shadow of the Erdtree peels back layers of the Lands Between's mythology that the base game only hinted at. Miquella's pilgrimage forms the emotional core of the expansion, and the cast of new NPCs — particularly the conflicted knight Leda and the stoic Hornsent — deliver some of the most memorable questlines in the franchise. Environmental storytelling remains FromSoftware's greatest narrative tool, and the Land of Shadow is thick with it. Item descriptions, architectural details, and carefully placed enemy encounters weave together a story of divine ambition and its consequences that feels both intimate and mythic.

Verdict

Shadow of the Erdtree is a monumental achievement. It delivers roughly 40 hours of content that matches — and in some areas surpasses — the quality of the base game. The new weapons, the layered map design, and the unforgettable boss encounters make this essential playing for anyone who fell in love with the Lands Between. Minor PC performance issues aside, this is FromSoftware at the peak of its craft, and it sets an almost unfairly high bar for what a DLC expansion can be.

Pros

  • Massive world expansion
  • Challenging new bosses
  • Creative weapons
  • Incredible level design

Cons

Final Verdict

Shadow of the Erdtree is the gold standard for what a DLC expansion should be — a breathtaking, brutal journey through one of the most meticulously crafted open worlds in gaming.
