ASUS Republic of Gamers has announced the ROG NUC 16, and this one is clearly aimed at gamers and creators who want serious PC power without building a massive tower under the desk.

The headline combo here is big: the ROG NUC 16 can be configured with up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 processor 290HX Plus from Intel’s Arrow Lake-HX family, paired with up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU. So yes, this is still a compact machine, but ASUS is pushing it more like a small-form-factor gaming and creator workstation than a basic mini PC.

For Malaysian gamers, the pitch is easy to understand. Not everyone has space for a full ATX rig, especially if your setup is in a bedroom, condo, dorm, or shared living area. A compact box that can sit vertically or horizontally is genuinely useful, and ASUS has included a patented removable stand so users can choose the layout that fits their desk.

Performance-wise, ASUS says the ROG NUC 16 delivers up to 2.3% better 3DMark performance than the previous ROG NUC when paired with the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus. That number is not exactly gila huge, so don’t expect a generational miracle just from the benchmark claim alone. The bigger deal is the overall platform upgrade: stronger CPU options, newer NVIDIA graphics, faster memory support, and more AI/creator features in a much smaller footprint than a traditional desktop.

Memory support goes up to 128GB of DDR5-6400, which is honestly more than what most gamers need. But for streamers, editors, 3D artists, and people who keep 47 Chrome tabs open while editing video, that headroom matters. It also makes the ROG NUC 16 more interesting for small studios or creators in Malaysia who want one machine for gaming, editing, rendering, and AI-assisted workloads.

On the graphics side, the RTX 5080 Laptop GPU brings support for NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, including machine-learning-based Super Resolution and Multi-frame Generation. For AAA games, ASUS says DLSS 4.5 can reduce latency and generate up to five additional frames per rendered frame, which should help keep demanding games smoother when ray tracing and high settings are enabled.

The updated Super Resolution transformer model is also said to improve lighting, fine detail, and motion clarity. That matters not just for games, but also for real-time rendering, video editing, and creative workflows up to 8K. NVIDIA Studio support is part of the package too, including faster image generation workflows for creators.

Thermals are always the main question with powerful compact PCs. ASUS says the ROG NUC 16 uses an upgraded thermal design, which it will definitely need if it wants to keep an Arrow Lake-HX chip and RTX 5080 Laptop GPU under control in a small chassis. Compact gaming PCs can be brilliant, but heat and fan noise are where the real judgement happens.

For SEA buyers, the ROG NUC 16 could be a strong option if you want console-like desk simplicity but proper PC flexibility. The catch, as usual, will be Malaysia RM pricing. The source material does not include local price or availability yet, so the final value will depend heavily on how ASUS Malaysia positions it against gaming laptops and custom small-form-factor desktops.
