ASUS is going hard on the no-compromise gaming laptop crowd with the new ROG Strix SCAR 18, and this one is very clearly aimed at people who want desktop-class power without actually building a desktop.

The headline feature is the display. ASUS says the new SCAR 18 is the first 18-inch gaming laptop with a 240Hz Mini LED panel, paired with ROG Nebula ELMB tech. ELMB stands for Extreme Low Motion Blur, and the idea is simple: cleaner motion when games get fast and chaotic.

For SEA gamers grinding ranked in titles like Valorant, Apex Legends, The Finals, CS2, or even fast camera-heavy games like Marvel Rivals, that matters. A high refresh rate is nice, but motion clarity is what makes flicks, tracking, and fast target switching feel properly sharp instead of smudgy.

The panel itself sounds properly premium. ASUS is using an 18-inch ROG Nebula HDR display with Mini LED backlighting, over 2,000 dimming zones, up to 1,600 nits peak brightness, HDR support, and 100% DCI-P3 colour coverage. It also supports NVIDIA G-SYNC, so gameplay should be smoother with less tearing when frame rates fluctuate.

Inside, the SCAR 18 is equally gila. ASUS is listing configurations with up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus, which is a step up from the Core Ultra 9 275HX used in the 2025 model. GPU options go as high as the GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU.

That combination puts this firmly in the “I want everything maxed out” category. ASUS is pitching it for 4K gaming, and honestly, with that GPU class and this kind of screen, it makes sense. This is not the laptop you buy for casual browsing and one game of Dota at mamak. This is more like a portable battle station for hardcore gamers, streamers, esports players, editors, and creators who need serious horsepower.

Memory and storage are also stacked. The laptop supports up to 128GB DDR5 RAM at 6400 MT/s, plus up to 8TB PCIe Gen 5 SSD storage in a 4TB + 4TB setup. That is massive for people juggling modern AAA installs, raw video files, game captures, and creative workloads.

ASUS also paid attention to upgradability, which is always nice to see on expensive gaming laptops. The SCAR 18 has a tool-less bottom panel, making it easier to access the internals. The SSD bays use ASUS’ ROG Q-Latch system, so swapping drives should be less mafan because you do not need tiny screws for the SSD itself.

Connectivity is properly next-gen too. You get dual Thunderbolt 5 ports, USB Type-A ports for peripherals, WiFi 7, and 2.5G LAN. For Malaysian gamers, the wired LAN is still a big win if you are playing seriously at home, because WiFi can still betray you at the worst possible ranked match moment.

There is also a 90Wh battery, but let’s be real: with this kind of hardware, nobody should expect all-day unplugged gaming. It might last several hours for lighter tasks, but once the RTX 5090 starts working, you will want the charger nearby.

ASUS has not announced official pricing yet. Wccftech notes that the flagship configuration is expected to cost well above US$4,000, which means Malaysians should mentally prepare for something beyond roughly RM18,000+ before local taxes, retailer pricing, and final Malaysia specs are considered.

So yes, this is absolutely not a budget gaming laptop. But for the small group of players and creators who want a giant high-refresh Mini LED screen, RTX 5090-class performance, huge upgrade potential, and desktop replacement energy, the new ROG Strix SCAR 18 looks like ASUS flexing hard.
