Fable still says Autumn 2026, even as GTA 6 rumours shake up Xbox’s release plans

Xbox’s long-awaited Fable reboot is back in the spotlight, and this time it is because of a very familiar problem: GTA 6.

A new rumour suggests Microsoft may be reconsidering when to launch Fable, with Rockstar’s next giant release apparently casting a very large shadow over the 2026 calendar. But at least publicly, Playground Games is not changing its tune.

The latest chatter came from Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, who said on the Game Mess Mornings podcast that he had heard Fable was internally pushed out of the Autumn 2026 window it had previously been aiming for. One possible reason mentioned was the looming arrival of GTA 6, which is widely expected to dominate player attention in a way very few games can realistically fight.

According to Grubb, Xbox is still trying to ship Fable in 2026, but there is concern about landing too close to Rockstar’s blockbuster. If that happens, the game could slide deeper into the year, and once a title gets pushed to December, the risk of it slipping again into 2027 becomes a lot more real.

That would make strategic sense. Fable is not just another release on the schedule. It is a major reboot of one of Xbox’s older fantasy RPG series, and Microsoft will likely want it to have proper breathing room instead of forcing it into a release window where every headline, stream, and social post gets swallowed by GTA 6.

Still, there is an important detail here: Xbox has not announced any delay.

In fact, Playground Games posted a fresh message saying, “Excited to welcome you back to Albion in Autumn 2026.” That is the clearest public signal so far that the studio is still standing by its original target, even if behind-the-scenes conversations are happening.

For Malaysian and wider SEA players, this matters more than it might seem. Big global releases do not just affect hype, they affect wallet share, playtime, internet conversation, and even community activity. If GTA 6 lands near another huge open-world game, most players here are not buying and grinding both at the same pace. One of them usually wins the month. Cafés, Discord servers, TikTok clips, livestreams, and esports-adjacent creator content also tend to orbit the biggest launch in the room.

That is why timing matters. A fantasy RPG like Fable needs space for previews, launch buzz, and word of mouth, especially in this region where Xbox still has to work harder than PlayStation, Nintendo, and PC-first ecosystems to stay top of mind.

It is also worth noting that Xbox already has a crowded lineup. The source report points to Forza Horizon 6 arriving next month, while games like Halo: Campaign Evolved, Minecraft Dungeons 2, Gears of War: E-Day, and the next Call of Duty are still without firm dates. That gives Microsoft plenty to juggle even before Fable enters the equation.

Xbox Game Studios boss Craig Duncan previously told GamesRadar that the company does pay close attention to the broader release calendar and makes decisions based on what is best for its games. So even though nothing is official yet, the idea of Xbox moving pieces around is not exactly far-fetched.

For now, the safest read is simple: the rumour says Xbox may be cautious, but Playground Games is still publicly saying Autumn 2026. Until Microsoft says otherwise, that remains the official position.

And honestly, if GTA 6 really is about to bend the whole industry’s schedule around itself, Fable probably will not be the last game to blink.
