Apple’s standard iPhone might not be the obvious “safe pick” next generation, if this latest rumour is accurate.
According to a new claim from a China-based leaker, the regular iPhone 18 could arrive with several cost-cutting changes that make it feel closer to Apple’s cheaper iPhone 18e model than many fans would expect. That is a pretty big deal, especially for Malaysia and SEA buyers who usually look at the non-Pro iPhone as the more sensible upgrade.
The regular iPhone 18 may launch later than usual
The vanilla iPhone 18 has already been rumoured to skip Apple’s usual September launch timing. Instead of appearing together with the full iPhone 18 family, it is reportedly planned for a spring release alongside the iPhone 18e.
If that happens, Apple’s September event would focus on the higher-end models: the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the long-rumoured foldable iPhone, which may be called iPhone Fold or possibly iPhone Ultra.
For Malaysian buyers, that would make the upgrade cycle a bit more awkward. Usually, everyone compares the new standard iPhone against the Pro models in one big launch window, then waits for telco bundles, Shopee/Lazada promos, or Machines/Switch pricing. If the regular model comes months later, some buyers may either stretch for the Pro or just grab the older iPhone 17 instead.
The rumoured downgrades sound quite serious
The leaker claims Apple may reduce costs on the regular iPhone 18 in a few key areas:
- A less advanced manufacturing process for the chipset
- Lower chip specifications
- Downgraded memory, either in capacity or speed
That does not automatically mean the phone will be bad. Apple’s chips are usually powerful enough for daily use, gaming, video, and social apps even when they are not the latest Pro-tier silicon. But if the gap between the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro becomes wider than usual, buyers need to pay attention.
This matters for mobile gamers too. In Malaysia and SEA, plenty of people use iPhones for Mobile Legends, PUBG Mobile, Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Wuthering Waves, and video editing for TikTok. If the regular iPhone 18 gets weaker memory or a less capable chip, long-session performance and future-proofing could be affected, even if everyday use still feels smooth.
The big question: downgraded compared to what?
Right now, the rumour is missing one important detail. It does not say whether these downgrades are compared to the iPhone 18 Pro models or compared to the current iPhone 17.
If the standard iPhone 18 is only weaker than the Pro and Pro Max, that is normal Apple behaviour. The Pro models always get the best hardware first.
But if the iPhone 18 is actually a step down from the iPhone 17 in some areas, then things get spicy. In that case, the iPhone 17 could become the smarter buy, especially once discounts hit local retailers and telco plans.
Should you wait or buy now?
For now, don’t panic-buy anything. This is still an early rumour, and Apple’s final specs may be different. But if you are planning an iPhone upgrade in Malaysia, the takeaway is simple: don’t assume the next regular iPhone will automatically be the best-value model.
If the iPhone 18 ends up feeling like an iPhone 18e-plus instead of a proper next-gen iPhone, the iPhone 17 may age very nicely as the better deal.
