Nintendo has finally put Star Fox back on the radar for Switch 2, but the reaction online is less “let’s go!” and more “bro, this game again?”
The newly revealed Star Fox project is being made from scratch for Switch 2, but it is not a fully new adventure. It is another remake of Star Fox 64, the Nintendo 64 classic that was itself a reboot of the original SNES Star Fox. For long-time fans, that history matters, because this is not the first time Nintendo has gone back to the same well.
Star Fox 64 already received an updated version on Nintendo 3DS in 2011 as Star Fox 64 3D. Later, Star Fox Zero on Wii U also reworked the same basic Star Fox experience. So while fans are genuinely happy to see Fox McCloud and the crew return, many are also joking that Nintendo seems determined to remake this one story forever.
The memes practically wrote themselves. Some fans joked that Star Fox 64 is called that because Nintendo plans to remake it 64 times. Others pointed out that this is now yet another version of the same core game instead of the brand-new Star Fox entry people have been asking for.
There has also been chatter around the game’s look. Based on what Nintendo has shown, this Switch 2 version appears to use a less cartoonish style compared to Fox McCloud’s recent appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. That is not automatically a bad thing, but it does show Nintendo may be positioning this as a more polished, modern sci-fi action title rather than leaning too hard into animated-movie cuteness.
For Malaysia and SEA players, the big question is simple: is this the Star Fox game that finally makes the series matter again here? Star Fox has always had a strong legacy among older Nintendo fans, but it has never been as culturally loud in our region as Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, or Smash. A Switch 2 remake could be a smart way to introduce younger players to the series without asking them to dig through old hardware or retro services.
That said, Nintendo also has to be careful. SEA players are price-sensitive, and many of us already have a long Switch 2 wishlist. If this feels like a premium nostalgia product rather than a meaningful upgrade, some fans may wait for discounts or skip the physical copy entirely.
Nintendo has confirmed the game will launch exclusively for Switch 2 on June 25. The digital version will be priced at $49.99 on the Nintendo eShop, while physical copies will cost $59.99. That difference is part of Nintendo’s new approach where digital and physical Switch 2 games can have separate prices.
The reveal also hits differently because Star Fox was reportedly mentioned in a major leak of upcoming Nintendo projects before the Direct. That same leak also pointed to a Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake planned for Christmas and a new 3D Mario game in 2027. With Star Fox now real, fans are naturally watching those other claims even more closely.
So yes, Star Fox is back — and that alone is good news. But Nintendo fans are not wrong to ask for more than another tour through familiar space lanes. If this remake is meant to bring new players in before the franchise finally moves forward, fair enough. But after this, Nintendo really needs to let Fox fly somewhere new.
