Nintendo Switch 2 Is Getting Pricier — Bad News If Malaysia Retail Follows

Nintendo has confirmed a price hike for the Switch 2, and while Malaysia is not named directly in the affected markets, this is still the kind of news SEA gamers need to pay attention to.

According to Eurogamer, the increase applies to the US, Canada, Japan, and Europe. For the US, the new price will put the Switch 2 at $500, with the changes for the US, Canada, and Europe taking effect from 1 September.

Japan gets hit earlier. Over there, the Switch 2 will rise from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980 starting 25 May. Nintendo is also adjusting prices for the original Switch console family and Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions in Japan, saying the move is meant to keep pricing properly aligned between regions.

Nintendo’s official reason is basically business pressure: changing market conditions and its global outlook. The company apologised for the effect on customers and stakeholders, but the message is clear — hardware is getting more expensive, even for Nintendo.

Why Malaysia and SEA gamers should care

Even though Malaysia is not listed in this round of confirmed price increases, console pricing here rarely exists in a vacuum. A lot depends on regional distribution, imported stock, currency movement, and how local retailers set bundles.

If the US, Japan, and Europe prices climb, Malaysian buyers may still feel it indirectly. Grey import units could become more expensive. Retailers might adjust bundle pricing. Accessories, games, and subscription pricing could also become more sensitive if Nintendo continues pushing for regional alignment.

For anyone planning to buy a Switch 2 at launch or soon after, this is a reminder not to assume the price will stay friendly forever. If you were already waiting for a good deal, you may want to track local pre-order pricing closely once Malaysian retailers start showing clearer numbers.

Console prices are moving up across the board

Nintendo is not alone here. Earlier this year, Sony also raised PlayStation hardware prices, with the base PS5 in the UK going up by around £90. Eurogamer previously spoke to Ampere Analysis’ Piers Harding-Rolls, who suggested Microsoft and Nintendo would likely follow with price increases of their own. That prediction is now looking pretty accurate for Nintendo.

Microsoft may not be safe either. In April, Xbox’s Asha Sharma said RAM prices could affect pricing and stock availability for its next-gen console project, currently known as Project Helix.

So this is bigger than just one Nintendo announcement. The whole console market is under pressure — components, profitability, currency, investor expectations, all the boring business stuff that eventually turns into one painful thing for players: higher prices.

The takeaway

The Switch 2 was always going to be a hot item, especially in SEA where Nintendo has a massive casual and family audience alongside the hardcore Zelda, Mario Kart, Pokémon, and Smash crowd. But if the global price trend keeps moving upward, Malaysian gamers may need to budget more carefully than expected.

No panic yet, bro — but definitely keep an eye on local pricing. If Switch 2 lands here with aggressive bundles or inflated import prices, this global price hike will probably be one of the reasons.
