PlayStation Plus Essential Is Getting Pricier For New Subscribers

Sony is bumping up the price of PlayStation Plus Essential in selected markets, and while Malaysia has not been specifically named in the source report, SEA players should still pay attention. Subscription pricing has a funny way of moving region by region, and once the big markets shift, everyone starts checking their renewal dates.

From May 20, new PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers in the US will pay more for the shorter plans. The monthly plan is going from US$9.99 to US$10.99, while the three-month plan is moving from US$24.99 to US$27.99.

Europe and the UK are getting similar changes too. In Europe, the new prices will start at €9.99 monthly and €27.99 for three months. In the UK, the updated pricing begins at £7.99 monthly and £21.99 for three months.

The good news? Existing subscribers are mostly safe for now. Sony says current members will not be affected unless their subscription changes or lapses. So if you are already on PS Plus Essential and just let it renew normally, you may dodge this round of price increases.

There are exceptions, though. Turkey and India are reportedly also seeing price changes for current subscribers, not just new ones.

For Malaysian PlayStation players, the key takeaway is simple: do not casually let your PS Plus lapse if you are happy with your current pricing. Even though the source report does not confirm a Malaysia-specific price hike, this is still the kind of change worth watching, especially if you usually renew month-to-month instead of committing to a longer plan.

PS Plus Essential is the base tier of Sony’s subscription service. It covers online multiplayer, monthly games, and a few extra perks. Basically, if you play games like EA Sports FC, Call of Duty, Monster Hunter, Gran Turismo, or anything multiplayer-heavy on PS5, this is the tier many players consider the minimum.

The increase itself is not massive in the US — US$1 more per month — but the bigger issue is the pattern. Gaming subscriptions, streaming platforms, handheld consoles, and even hardware accessories have all been creeping upward. For Malaysian gamers, every small increase hits harder once you convert to RM and stack it with other monthly payments like Netflix, Spotify, Game Pass, mobile data, and maybe a few gacha sins we pretend not to see.

Sony’s explanation is that the change is due to “ongoing market conditions,” which is the usual corporate way of saying costs are up without giving players much detail. To be fair, PS Plus Essential’s shorter-plan pricing has apparently stayed steady since the PlayStation Plus revamp in 2022. Still, nobody enjoys paying more for the same baseline access.

There is also interesting timing here. With Grand Theft Auto 6 currently expected later in the year, Sony may be preparing for a wave of new PS5 players and returning subscribers. A huge release like GTA 6 can easily push casual players back into online multiplayer, and PS Plus Essential sits right at the gate.

If you are already subscribed, the safest move is to keep your plan active and avoid changing it unless you really need to. If you were planning to sign up soon in an affected region, doing it before the new pricing kicks in could help lock in the old rate.

For now, Malaysian players should treat this as an early warning rather than panic news. Check your renewal, watch local PS Store pricing, and do the usual gamer maths before committing.
