Sony’s 1000X headphone line might be getting a special anniversary flex, and if the latest leak is accurate, this one is not aimed at casual Shopee bargain hunters.
According to Android Authority, Sony appears to have accidentally published details for a new headphone called “1000X THE Collexion” on its own Australia and New Zealand websites. The listing reportedly carried the model number WH-1000XX and the tagline “Master the art of listening.” Sony has since removed the information, but the timing and naming are interesting.
The original Sony MDR-1000X launched in 2016, which means the 1000X series is hitting its 10-year milestone. That makes the “XX” branding feel less random and more like a limited-edition anniversary model for Sony’s flagship noise-cancelling headphone family.
So far, Sony has not shown what the WH-1000XX actually looks like. However, alt text from the removed Sony listing reportedly confirmed a white colour option, matching an earlier leak that also mentioned black and white versions.
The scary part? The price.
Dealabs previously claimed the headphones will launch on May 19 at €629, around US$740. For Malaysian readers, that lands roughly in the RM3,100 to RM3,500 zone before any local tax, import pricing, or retailer markup. That is deep premium territory — more expensive than what many people here would pay for a full gaming monitor, a mid-range phone, or a serious mechanical keyboard setup.
In terms of features, earlier leaks point to active noise cancellation, a MediaTek MT2855 chip, and Sony’s DSEE Ultimate audio upscaling. Android Authority also notes that previous leaks suggest noise cancellation around the WH-1000XM6 level, which would make sense if Sony is positioning this as a premium collector-style model rather than a normal mass-market upgrade.
One Reddit user, claiming to have spoken with someone testing the headphones, said the WH-1000XX uses a non-foldable design, similar to recent Sony headphones, but with a more premium finish using metal and synthetic leather. The same claim also suggests there may not be a major sound upgrade over the older WH-1000XM5.
That last bit matters. If the WH-1000XX is mostly about design, materials, and anniversary branding, Malaysian buyers will need to ask the obvious question: is this worth flagship gaming laptop accessory money?
For commuters in KL, students taking LRT/MRT daily, remote workers in noisy cafes, and frequent travellers flying around SEA, Sony’s 1000X headphones have always made sense because the noise cancellation is genuinely useful. But at this leaked price, the WH-1000XX could end up being more of a collector drop for hardcore Sony fans than the default recommendation for everyone.
If Sony Malaysia brings it in officially, expect interest from audiophiles and premium lifestyle tech buyers. But for most people, the regular WH-1000XM5 or WH-1000XM6 will probably remain the smarter buy unless this anniversary version has something truly special that has not leaked yet.
For now, Sony has not officially announced the WH-1000XX. But when your own regional websites briefly mention a product called “1000X THE Collexion,” bro, that is usually not nothing.
