Sony has finally put a date on its next premium Android phone. The Xperia 1 VIII will be revealed on May 12 at 10:00 PM ET, which works out to May 13 at 10:00 AM for Malaysia.
The timing looks weird if you’re watching from the US, but it makes sense because Sony is announcing the phone from Japan. The launch will be streamed on Sony’s YouTube channel, so Malaysian Sony fans, camera nerds, and Android purists can actually watch it at a very normal morning hour. Nice.
This is Sony’s 2026 flagship, and based on what has surfaced so far, the Xperia 1 VIII could be one of the brand’s bigger design changes in recent years. The key thing to watch is the rear camera area. Sony’s teaser points to a triple-camera setup, while leaked renders suggest the phone is moving away from last year’s look with a much more noticeable camera island.
The rumoured camera hardware includes a 16mm ultrawide, a 24mm main camera, and a 70mm telephoto lens. That sounds very Sony — less about stuffing random sensors into the phone, more about giving users familiar focal lengths that feel closer to proper camera language. The redesign is also believed to be linked to a larger sensor, which would be good news if it improves low-light shots and overall dynamic range.
Expected specs include a 6.5-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a two-day battery, and yes bro, the 3.5mm headphone jack is apparently still alive. In 2026, that alone makes the Xperia feel like a unicorn, especially for people who still use wired IEMs for gaming, music, editing, or just because Bluetooth latency can be annoying.
For Malaysia and SEA, the Xperia 1 VIII is probably not going to be a mainstream flagship like a Galaxy S series, iPhone, Xiaomi Ultra, or vivo X series. Sony phones usually target a smaller crowd: mobile photography people, video shooters, audiophiles, and users who actually care about manual controls. Android Authority notes that Sony flagships are known more for their pro-style camera app and manual settings than for chasing the craziest spec sheet.
That could matter for local creators. If the Xperia 1 VIII keeps Sony’s stronger manual camera tools, it might appeal to people shooting events, cosplay, product reels, car meets, gigs, or travel content around Malaysia and Singapore. The problem, as always, is price.
Leaked Amazon listings reportedly showed the Xperia 1 VIII priced between €1,868.99 and £1,728, roughly $2,196 to $2,352. Converted loosely, that is around RM10,300 to RM11,100 before you even think about import tax, shipping, warranty headaches, or local availability. Some listings may bundle Sony’s WH-1000XM6 headphones, but even with a free premium headset, this is still serious money.
There is also no guarantee of broad availability. The Xperia 1 VII did not launch in the US, and while that does not directly decide Malaysia’s situation, it shows Sony is being selective with markets. If the Xperia 1 VIII does not officially land here, interested buyers may need to rely on importers — which means higher prices and weaker after-sales confidence.
Still, Sony flagships always have that special appeal. They are not for everyone, but for the right kind of user, they hit differently. We’ll know the full story when Sony shows the Xperia 1 VIII on May 13 Malaysia time.
