Sony Xperia 1 VIII Launches May 13: Here’s What Malaysian Phone Fans Should Watch For

Sony’s next flagship phone is almost here. The Sony Xperia 1 VIII is set to be officially revealed on May 13, with Sony streaming the launch on YouTube at 2 AM UTC — that’s 10 AM Malaysia/Singapore time, so no need to stay up until ridiculous gamer hours for this one.

For now, Sony is still keeping the full spec sheet under wraps. No confirmed chipset, no battery details, no official display numbers, and most importantly for us in Malaysia: no RM pricing or local availability yet. Those details should only become clear once the event wraps.

Still, leaks have already given us a decent idea of what Sony might be cooking.

What the leaks are pointing to

Based on leaked renders, the Xperia 1 VIII looks like it will keep Sony’s familiar clean-front design with a notchless display. That’s a very Sony move — while most brands chase punch-holes, curved glass, and ultra-thin bezels, Xperia phones usually stick to a more functional, media-friendly shape.

At the back, the phone is expected to carry a triple-camera setup arranged in an upside-down L layout. The camera system is rumoured to include:

  • A 24mm main camera
  • A 16mm ultrawide camera
  • A 70mm telephoto camera

The telephoto sensor is said to fall somewhere between 1/3-inch and 1/2-inch in size. That detail matters because Xperia phones have always targeted camera nerds, creators, and people who actually care about manual controls rather than just blasting everything with AI sharpening.

Why Malaysia and SEA should care

Let’s be real: Sony Xperia phones are not the mainstream choice here. In Malaysia, most buyers are usually comparing Samsung Galaxy, iPhone, Xiaomi, HONOR, vivo, OPPO, realme, and gaming-focused phones before Xperia even enters the chat.

But Xperia still has a very specific fanbase. These are the people who care about camera tuning, display quality, creator tools, and Sony’s more “proper camera” approach to mobile photography. If the Xperia 1 VIII keeps that identity while improving zoom, image processing, and thermals, it could still be one of the more interesting Android flagships of 2026 — even if it stays niche.

The big question for Malaysian buyers will be price. Xperia flagships are usually premium devices, and if the Xperia 1 VIII lands anywhere near the ultra-flagship bracket, it will need to justify itself hard against Samsung’s Ultra models, Xiaomi’s camera flagships, and whatever HONOR or vivo bring to SEA.

Also important: availability. A phone can look amazing on paper, but if Malaysian fans need to rely on grey imports, limited warranty options, or inflated reseller pricing, that immediately makes the buying decision more sus.

The launch should answer the real questions

Sony’s May 13 event should finally confirm the Xperia 1 VIII’s full specs, camera hardware, software features, pricing, and market rollout. Until then, the smart move is to treat the leaked camera details as interesting but not final.

If Sony nails the camera experience and keeps the phone creator-friendly, Xperia fans will be eating. If the price is too high or availability is weak in SEA, it may end up as another “cool phone we admire from afar” situation.

Either way, this is one launch worth watching — especially if you’re the kind of person who still believes smartphones should feel like actual creative tools, not just social media rectangles.
