Virtuos Wants GTA V And Red Dead Redemption 2 On Nintendo Switch

Virtuos sounds ready to chase another “impossible port”, and this one would be a big deal for Nintendo Switch owners.

The port and remaster specialist, recently involved with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, has said it would like to adapt Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 for Nintendo’s hybrid console.

The comment came from Virtuos technical director Andy Fong in an interview with Pocket Tactics. Fong said the team is keen on the idea because they are fans of both Rockstar games and believe the titles could find a fresh audience on Switch.

That is a spicy ambition, bro. GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 are not small games you simply squeeze into a cartridge and call it a day. GTA V is already famous for surviving multiple console generations, while RDR2 remains one of the most detailed open-world games ever made. Between huge maps, dense systems, animation work, AI, physics, streaming, and visual demands, these are exactly the kind of games people usually call “no chance lah” for the original Switch.

But to be fair, Virtuos has history here. The studio previously brought L.A. Noire to Nintendo Switch in 2017, so it has already worked with a Rockstar open-world title on the platform. The Switch has also built a reputation for occasionally pulling off ports that looked impossible on paper. We have seen enough technical wizardry on that small tablet to know the answer is not always an immediate no.

For Malaysia and SEA players, the interesting part is the installed base. Not everyone is rushing to buy a Switch 2 immediately, especially if the current Switch is still the family console, travel machine, or dorm-room multiplayer box. The Switch has sold more than 155 million units globally, which means there are still loads of players who might happily play GTA V or RDR2 handheld-first, even if the graphics take a hit.

That said, the timing is weird. If these ports ever happen, many players will naturally ask: why not target Nintendo Switch 2 instead? The original Switch is close to a decade old, and both Rockstar games would benefit massively from stronger hardware. RDR2 still has not received a proper 60 FPS patch on current-gen consoles, despite rumours and reports, so seeing it arrive on old Switch hardware first would be both exciting and slightly funny.

There is also no confirmation that either port is actually in development. This is Virtuos expressing interest, not Rockstar announcing a release date. No Malaysian pricing, regional launch details, cartridge size, performance target, or eShop listing exists for now.

Still, the idea makes sense from a library perspective. Switch already has Red Dead Redemption and several GTA titles available, so GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 would basically complete the biggest Rockstar gap on the console. If Virtuos can really make them playable without turning them into blurry slideshow versions, that would be a serious flex.

For now, treat this as “interesting possibility”, not confirmed news. But if GTA V and RDR2 ever land on Switch, Malaysian players who still love handheld gaming will definitely pay attention.
