G2 Esports Claims First Title with NertZ – What This Means for the SEA CS2 Scene

G2 Esports have emerged victorious at Stake Ranked Episode 1, defeating BetBoom in a closely contested grand final with a 2-1 scoreline. This marks their first championship win with Guy “NertZ” Iluz, the Israeli rifler who recently joined the team.

While this might seem like a European tournament, it’s worth paying attention for Malaysian and Southeast Asian Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) fans. Why? Because the results of Stake Ranked directly impact Major qualification – the most prestigious tournament in CS2. BetBoom’s loss means they’ll be starting in Stage 1 of the upcoming IEM Cologne Major, while a win would have guaranteed them a spot in Stage 2. This highlights the competitive intensity at the top level and how every match matters.

NertZ, previously with Liquid, had been struggling to find his form, with reports suggesting team chemistry issues were holding him back. He’s now looking like the player who earned the Rookie of the Year award in 2023, and his performance has been a key factor in G2’s success. In the final against BetBoom, it was a team effort, with Matúš “MATYS” Šimko and Nikita “HeavyGod” Martynenko stepping up alongside NertZ.

The series saw a back-and-forth battle. BetBoom took the first map, Anubis, with a strong offensive push. G2 responded on Ancient, securing a narrow 13-11 victory thanks to some clutch plays, including a daring 1v3 ninja defuse by HeavyGod. The deciding map, Dust2, was a nail-biter, with G2 ultimately taking the win after a series of tense rounds and a crucial triple kill from MATYS.

BetBoom will be disappointed with the result, especially after a strong run of three consecutive LAN events – even with two stand-in players. They’ve still secured their place at the IEM Cologne Major, which is a fantastic achievement, but will be looking to refine their game and come back stronger.

For the SEA CS2 community, this tournament serves as a reminder of the skill and strategy at the highest level. It’s a great opportunity to analyze the gameplay, learn from the pros, and push our own local teams to compete on the international stage. Keep an eye out for the IEM Cologne Major – it’s where the best CS2 teams in the world will battle it out for the championship title.
