Order of the Sinking Star Brings 1,000+ Puzzles to Switch 2 and PC

After going quiet since its reveal at The Game Awards, Order of the Sinking Star is finally back in the spotlight — and yes, it is coming to Nintendo Switch 2.

Thekla’s upcoming puzzle adventure, led by Jonathan Blow, now has a fresh overview trailer showing off what kind of brain-melting structure players can expect. The game is planned to launch this year on PC and Nintendo Switch 2, though an exact release date has not been announced yet.

For Malaysian and SEA players, the Switch 2 confirmation is actually a pretty big deal. A puzzle game with this much content sounds like the kind of title that benefits hard from portability — something you can chip away at during commute, mamak downtime, or while travelling without needing to commit to a full desktop setup.

Blow also highlighted that point in the announcement, saying the game’s size and puzzle count make the Switch 2’s portable format a natural fit. With more than 1,000 puzzles in the game, this sounds less like a quick weekend clear and more like one of those “keep installed forever” titles.

Four Games Inside One Bigger Mystery

On the surface, Order of the Sinking Star looks like an overhead adventure packed with puzzles. But the interesting part is how it is built around four separate sub-games, each with its own cast, rules, and mechanical identity.

The four parts are:

  • The Hearty Heroes of Hauling
  • The Mirror Isles
  • Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes
  • The Promise

Each one can be played in any order, so players are not forced into a strict route. That already makes it sound more flexible than a typical puzzle campaign, especially for players who like jumping between ideas when one section gets too spicy.

One of the showcased sub-games, The Hearty Heroes of Hauling, follows a fantasy-style moving company made up of a Wizard, Bard, Cleric, Thief, Druid, and Warrior. The fun is in how their different abilities affect puzzle solving. For example, the Thief can pull objects, while the Warrior can push them.

Meanwhile, The Mirror Isles focuses on a trader exploring a strange archipelago where he can switch places with his reflection. That one already sounds like the kind of mechanic that starts simple, then suddenly becomes gila complicated once the level design starts playing tricks on you.

Where Things Get Really Interesting

Thekla is not just making four separate puzzle packs and calling it a day. The bigger hook is that these stories eventually begin to overlap. Characters from different sub-games can meet, and levels can start combining their mechanics.

That means the game may eventually ask players to think across multiple systems at once — like using reflection-based mechanics together with character abilities from another storyline. The trailer even teases interactions such as mirroring a fire dragon, which gives a small taste of how strange the puzzle logic could become.

The mysterious group known as the Order of the Sinking Star appears to be behind this crossover chaos, but the reason is something players will need to uncover themselves.

Why SEA Puzzle Fans Should Watch This

Puzzle games can be a niche sell here compared to big multiplayer titles, gacha games, or esports staples, but Jonathan Blow’s name carries weight because of games like Braid and The Witness. His projects usually attract players who enjoy clean logic, big “aha” moments, and puzzles that respect your brain instead of just wasting your time.

If Order of the Sinking Star lands well, it could be one of the stronger “solo game for thinking people” releases on Switch 2 and PC this year. Also, with over 1,000 puzzles, the value proposition could be solid for Malaysian players — assuming pricing is reasonable when local eShop and PC store listings go live.

No release date yet, but this is one to keep on the radar if you like puzzle games that go beyond basic box-pushing.
