Sony Reportedly Pulls Back on Big PlayStation Single-Player Games for PC

Sony’s PC strategy might be changing in a pretty major way, and for Malaysian players, this one matters — especially if you’ve been happily waiting for PlayStation exclusives to eventually land on Steam instead of buying a PS5.

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Sony is reportedly stepping back from releasing its major internally developed single-player PlayStation games on PC. The update was apparently shared by Hermen Hulst, the head of PlayStation’s studios business, during an employee town hall on Monday.

This lines up with Schreier’s earlier reporting from March, where he said Sony had cancelled PC plans for last year’s Ghost of Yōtei and other first-party games. The important detail: this doesn’t seem to apply across the board. Online and live-service games are still expected to hit multiple platforms.

So what changes for PC players?

For the past few years, Sony has been slowly turning PC into a second home for PlayStation blockbusters. We’ve seen games like Spider-Man 2, Ghost of Tsushima, both The Last of Us games, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered arrive on PC. Multiplayer releases like Helldivers 2 and Marathon have also been part of Sony’s broader platform push.

But Sony’s messaging has always been different between single-player and live-service titles. Two years ago, Hulst said PlayStation’s live-service games would launch “day and date” on PC and PS5. For story-driven single-player games, Sony had already been more selective, taking what Hulst called a more strategic approach.

Now, if this latest report is accurate, that strategy may be moving further back toward traditional console exclusivity.

Why Malaysia and SEA gamers should care

Here’s the local reality: PC gaming is massive in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. A lot of players here already have capable gaming PCs, especially with Steam sales, cyber cafes, custom rigs, and laptop gaming being so common. For many, waiting one or two years for a PlayStation game to hit PC was the practical move.

A PS5 is still a big purchase. Between the console, PS Plus, and full-price games, the cost can add up fast in RM. If Sony slows or stops PC ports for its biggest first-party single-player games, Malaysian players who want those titles early — or at all — may have to seriously consider getting a PS5 instead of relying on future Steam releases.

It also changes the value calculation for PC-only gamers. Previously, the vibe was: “Just wait, bro, it’ll probably come to PC.” That may no longer be safe for PlayStation’s biggest narrative titles.

Are console exclusives coming back?

Interestingly, Sony might not be alone in rethinking exclusives. The Verge also notes that Microsoft’s new Xbox chief, Asha Sharma, told staff she is “reevaluating” exclusive games for Xbox.

That’s a sharp shift from the recent industry trend, where both Sony and Microsoft have been more willing to bring games beyond their own hardware. If both platform holders start tightening their exclusive lineups again, we could be heading into a more old-school console war era — not exactly great news for players who just want everything available everywhere.

For now, Sony hasn’t officially announced a blanket rule, so don’t treat this as every future PlayStation game being locked away forever. But the signal is clear: if you’re a PC player waiting for the next wave of PlayStation single-player hits, the wait might be longer, less certain, or maybe not happening at all.
