Sony Xperia 1 VIII Thickness Drama: The Spec Sheet May Be Underselling Its Size

Sony’s latest flagship is already catching heat again, and this time the issue is not about camera AI or software drama. It is about something much more basic: how thick the phone actually is.

According to Sony’s own Xperia 1 VIII spec sheet, the phone measures 8.3mm thick. But a new claim shared by OnLeaks suggests the real-world measurement is closer to 8.59mm. That is not a massive difference in daily use, sure, but for a premium flagship phone, the spec sheet is supposed to be tight. At this level, buyers expect the numbers to be accurate.

The likely explanation is not that Sony is trying to trick anyone. The current theory is that Sony may have measured only the phone’s frame, without fully accounting for the slightly raised glass on the front and back. If that is what happened, then the listed 8.3mm figure may technically describe part of the device, but not the actual total thickness you feel in hand or measure with calipers.

That is where the issue gets messy. A difference between 8.3mm and 8.59mm sounds small on paper, but it is still too large to wave away as simple rounding. If a phone is sold as a premium product, the full physical dimensions matter — especially when people are comparing it against other expensive flagships.

For Malaysia and SEA buyers, this matters more than it looks. Sony Xperia phones already sit in a niche corner here, usually attracting enthusiasts who care about cameras, displays, audio, and that clean Sony design language. These are not casual impulse buys for most people. If you are importing one, waiting for regional availability, or comparing it against other Android flagships, you are probably checking every spec before dropping serious money.

Thickness also affects the stuff Malaysian users actually care about day to day: grip, pocket feel, case fit, heat perception during gaming, and whether the phone still feels sleek after adding a protective case. In a market where many people buy cases from Shopee or Lazada before the phone even arrives, accurate dimensions are not just nerd trivia. They can affect accessory compatibility too.

The timing is also rough for Sony. The Xperia 1 VIII only launched last week and has already been dragged into controversy over its AI camera handling and Sony’s response to that situation. Now, another talking point has landed — this time from the hardware spec sheet itself. For a brand that depends heavily on enthusiast trust, these little details stack up fast.

On the hardware side, the Xperia 1 VIII is still very much a high-end device. It comes with a 6.5-inch LTPO OLED display running at 120Hz, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, a 5,000mAh battery, and a triple rear camera setup that is mostly carried over from the previous generation. The phone starts at £1,399 / €1,499, putting it in direct competition with ultra-premium rivals like the Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Oppo Find X9 Ultra.

And that is exactly why this thickness debate is getting attention. When a phone is priced in that elite tier, people are less forgiving. You are not buying a budget mid-ranger where small spec sheet weirdness gets ignored. You are buying into Sony’s premium Xperia promise — precision, creator-focused hardware, and no-nonsense engineering.

Sony should probably update the official measurement if the 8.59mm figure is accurate. The phone will not suddenly become bad because it is a fraction of a millimetre thicker, but leaving a questionable number on the spec sheet is just asking for more drama.

For now, Xperia fans in Malaysia and SEA should treat the 8.3mm claim with caution. If thickness, hand feel, or case fit matters to you, wait for more hands-on measurements before making the jump.
