Xbox May Rethink Exclusives as Microsoft Pushes a ‘Return of Xbox’

Xbox fans, this one is worth watching.

Microsoft’s new Xbox boss Asha Sharma has reportedly started laying out her direction for the brand, and one of the biggest talking points is the future of Xbox exclusives. According to The Verge, Sharma held an internal all-hands meeting with employees where she discussed a wider “return of Xbox” strategy.

Part of that plan includes shifting the company’s gaming branding back toward Xbox after the Microsoft Gaming era. But the more spicy bit is this: Xbox is now looking again at how it handles exclusive games, timed release windows, and even AI.

In a joint memo from Sharma and Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty, the company said it will “reevaluate” its approach to exclusivity, windowing, and AI, with more details to come once decisions are made.

That does not mean Xbox is suddenly going back to the old-school console war playbook tomorrow. There is no confirmed policy change yet. But it does show Microsoft knows this topic is still sensitive among Xbox players.

Why exclusives are suddenly complicated for Xbox

For years, the logic was simple: buy an Xbox because certain games only launch on Xbox and PC. But Microsoft has already started breaking that wall by bringing some of its games to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.

That move shocked plenty of Xbox fans, but from a business angle, it is not hard to understand. More platforms mean more sales. The Verge points to Forza Horizon 5 as one example of a game that has brought in meaningful revenue after expanding beyond Xbox.

So the tricky question now is: how does Xbox keep its own console and ecosystem attractive while still making money from players on PlayStation and Nintendo hardware?

One possible middle ground is timed exclusivity. Microsoft could launch first-party titles on Xbox and PC first, then bring them to other platforms later. That keeps Xbox owners feeling like they get early access, while still letting Microsoft earn from the wider market afterwards.

Forza Horizon 6 may become an important test case here, since it is expected to arrive on Xbox and PC first before heading to PS5 later.

Why Malaysian and SEA gamers should care

For players in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, this is not just corporate drama. It affects how we decide what hardware to buy, where to spend on subscriptions, and whether Game Pass remains the best value play.

Console buying here is already very price-sensitive. A PS5, Xbox Series console, gaming laptop, or handheld PC is not a casual purchase for most people. If Microsoft keeps pushing games across platforms, some Malaysian gamers may feel less pressure to buy Xbox hardware specifically.

But if Xbox uses timed exclusives smartly, Game Pass could still remain super tempting. Getting major Xbox titles day one on console and PC is a big deal, especially for players who already game on Windows laptops or desktops. In SEA, where PC gaming is still massive, Xbox’s PC-first strength matters a lot.

There is also the Nintendo angle. If more Xbox titles eventually reach Switch or future Nintendo hardware, that could be huge for casual and family players here. Not everyone wants another console under the TV, bro.

Xbox’s new scoreboard: daily active players

Another interesting shift from Sharma’s memo is how Xbox will measure progress. The company’s new “north star” is daily active players, not just console sales or subscriptions.

That tells us Microsoft is thinking more like a platform company than a traditional console maker. The key priorities mentioned are hardware, content, experiences, and services.

Basically, Xbox wants people playing inside its ecosystem every day, whether that happens on a console, PC, cloud device, or maybe even a rival platform.

For now, nothing is locked in. But this is a clear signal that Xbox’s multiplatform strategy is still being debated internally. If Microsoft finds the right balance, players could get more access without completely killing the value of owning Xbox hardware.

If it gets the balance wrong? Then Xbox fans will definitely let them know. Loudly.
