Nintendo and Sony’s live-action The Legend of Zelda movie is still more than a year away, but fans are already in full theory mode after a fresh wave of set leaks.
The film has reportedly wrapped shooting in New Zealand ahead of its May 7, 2027 release, and the latest images making the rounds online are giving Zelda fans plenty to pick apart. The big takeaway right now is simple: this does not look like a straight adaptation of just one game.
That matters, because Zelda has never been a one-style series. Every era of Link has its own vibe, its own gear, and its own version of Hyrule. From what fans have spotted so far, the movie may be pulling bits from multiple games instead of locking itself to one specific timeline or storyline.
First real look at Link
The leaked images came from a since-deleted Instagram post by the movie’s cinematographer, Gyula Pados. Fans were quick enough to save the photos before the post disappeared, and one image in particular is getting the most attention.
A photo of the movie’s clapper appears to show Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, dressed in a full green hero outfit and holding the Master Sword. His look has some clear Zelda DNA that longtime fans immediately recognised.
The tunic and chainmail combo feels close to Twilight Princess Link, while a cape-like detail on his back has people comparing it to one of Link’s looks in Tears of the Kingdom. If those comparisons hold up, the costume design alone suggests the movie is mixing visual cues from different entries in the series.
For Zelda fans in Malaysia and across SEA, that’s actually a pretty interesting move. Not everyone here grew up with the exact same Zelda game. Some know the series from older classics like Ocarina of Time, while others jumped in through Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom on Switch. A blended approach could make the film feel more familiar to a wider crowd instead of appealing only to one generation of fans.
Is that the Temple of Time?
The other image fans are obsessing over is a group photo of the production crew standing on set. The background is only partly visible, but there’s enough detail for people to start connecting dots.
Some fans think the set could be the Temple of Time, specifically the version associated with Ocarina of Time. Others noticed floor engravings that they believe resemble the Goddess Pearls from The Wind Waker.
If that reading is correct, then the movie may be borrowing worldbuilding and iconography from several Zelda games at once. Of course, it could also just be using familiar series lore as visual flavour for a more standalone story. Right now, nobody outside the production knows for sure.
Story details are still fuzzy
There was also a story synopsis added to the film’s IMDb page, but it sounded like a very broad Zelda setup rather than confirmed plot information. It described Link as a young warrior protecting Hyrule from Ganon, who is after the Triforce, with monsters, dungeons, puzzles, and sacred artifacts all part of the journey.
In other words, it reads like a classic Zelda summary, not solid proof of which game this movie is adapting.
At the moment, the only officially confirmed casting mentioned in the report is Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda. Some fans are also speculating from earlier set photos that Dichen Lachman could be playing Impa, though that has not been officially confirmed.
Why SEA fans should keep an eye on this
Game adaptations are a big deal now, and Zelda is one of Nintendo’s most important franchises. For SEA audiences, especially Switch players and longtime Nintendo fans, this film could be the difference between a niche fantasy movie and a proper regional hype event. If Nintendo gets the tone right, expect plenty of discussion across local gaming circles, cosplay communities, and anime-style fandom spaces too.
For now though, these leaks raise more questions than answers. But one thing is clear: the Zelda movie already has fans debating timelines, visual references, and what kind of Hyrule we’re about to get.
