Apple’s ‘Free’ AirPods Pro 3 Promo Has A Big Catch

Apple’s latest Apple Card promo sounds like the kind of deal that would instantly go viral: sign up, get AirPods Pro 3 for free. But once you read the actual mechanics, this one is less “free gift” and more “long cashback grind”.

The offer is now live, following earlier rumours that Apple was preparing a free AirPods Pro 3 deal for new Apple Card users. The catch? You do not simply apply for the card and receive the earbuds. You still need to buy the AirPods Pro 3 from Apple first, then slowly earn the money back over several months.

Here’s how it works. The promo is only for new Apple Card customers who have never had the card before. They must apply by June 15. After that, they need to use the new Apple Card to purchase AirPods Pro 3 directly from Apple, also by June 15.

The refund then comes later through cashback. From July 1, 2026 until April 30, 2027, users can earn US$25 cashback per month for ten months. If everything is done correctly, that adds up to US$250, which is the cost of the AirPods Pro 3 in this promo structure.

But here is the part that makes the deal feel very Apple Card-ish: to unlock each month’s US$25 cashback, users must make at least 10 Apple Card transactions during that month. The amount can be tiny — GSMArena notes that even purchases of 1 cent or more qualify — but you still need to hit the transaction count.

So technically, yes, the AirPods Pro 3 can become “free”. But only after making 100 total Apple Card purchases across 10 months, and only after waiting until the end of April 2027 to receive the full US$250 back.

For Malaysian and SEA readers, the biggest thing to know is simple: Apple Card is still US-only. That means this is not something Apple Malaysia users can sign up for locally, even if the deal sounds tempting. No Maybank card trick, no Shopee workaround, no “can I use my MY Apple ID?” shortcut — this promo is tied to Apple’s US financial product.

Still, it is worth paying attention because promos like this show how Apple is increasingly using services and financing products to lock users deeper into its ecosystem. Instead of a normal discount, Apple is encouraging repeated card usage over almost a full year. For users already inside the US Apple ecosystem, it might be a decent deal if they were going to buy AirPods Pro 3 anyway and regularly use Apple Card.

For everyone else, especially in Malaysia, this is more of a reminder to read the fine print before getting excited over “free” hardware headlines. A proper upfront discount is easy to understand. A 10-month cashback mission with 100 required transactions? Bro, that’s basically a side quest.
